Well, he is (badly) hiding under a hot air balloon he has totaled with a couple of dozens of repeated pierces by his horn. I did not want to do every pony with a screaming, raving insanity.

Pokey Pierce seems perfectly normal to me.

I like it personally, but I do think the ears are what tips it over the edge. It’s good to have unique character design- but not several unique features squished onto one thing. The ears give her a bit of a Alpaca/Llama vibe.

Aware of that design trap, but I was trying to make a ‘companion’ pony to be a third for these two, and they were designed to be complimentary of each other, so I had to make it in a sort of roundabout way. That’s the reason for the funny ears. I did abandon some of the extra detail I have planned for her during the time I first drew her, feeling as they really served no purpose. (Baggy/dark eyelids, baseball hat… I am sure I had others, but it won’t come to mind at present time)  
Her mane is just plain terribly messy and torn, as explained on the first page. It accompanies her braces, actually. They might have put those on her, but she won’t yield to mane expectations! There was a direct line of dialogue I cut referring to that, feeling it was awkward and contrived to spell it out.  
I originally wasn’t going with dual tone mane, but I liked it when I was trying to come up with a color scheme for her (her base mane color and body color are close to each other), and so it stayed.

Agreed. Should have dropped the droopy ears, gone with monochromatic hair, or a normal manestyle. All three together is just too much.
