What the Fluff?
@PL
I just now realize how many old cartoons promoted lung cancer.

In your first example, Looney Tunes was parodying how detectives always smoked. In the second, smoking was what “bad kids” did, and when Pinocchio rebelled, it along with drinking and gambling are what he did with the other “bad kids.” (And he regretted it later because it made him seriously sick.)

The third was also a parody. So those examples weren’t really promoting smoking. In fact, the second was quite the reverse.

However attitudes in general about smoking in the 40s and 50s were different as the dangers weren’t fully-known to the public, and they hadn’t learned that companies will often straight-up lie to your face to make a buck.

Now that I think about it, Thomas the Tank Engine was pretty violent back then. Holy shit there were tons of train crashes. There was even a character who fucking DIED ON SCREEN. And the worst part was that he was NEVER SEEN IN ANOTHER EPISODE. The episode is called Donald and Douglas. And the best part was that George Carlin narrated it.
