Knight Shade: “His hunger for power is endless! And I’m forced to help Zeb supply him with more and more shadows. If I don’t help him, he’ll steal my shadow, which would end my career. But worse, it would mean I’d never have any hope of restoring Grayvale -”

His voice is actually pretty deep

This makes way too much sense. XD
Zeb = unfair unreliable manager
Arabus = cruel merciless recording industry
He’s not white, he’s Michael Jackson.
If you consider the supernatural shadow-eating nature of their genie/wizard boss, the two of them get more of a voodoo / tim burton vibe to make them more unique.
Well, that and the behaviours the characters are given which would seem to confirm the visual stereotypes. Thankfully you’re right about the voices.
They’re enjoyable cartoons though, with a pinch of salt. If me snark rises up, it’s just my oversalting for comic effect.
Problematic because those two look stereotypical?
If it helps any, neither of them have the voices you’d expect.
One of the more problematic episodes from G1 all right, but totally redeemed by how happy genie wizard dude is to play with ponies. Aww, just look at him!
He doesn’t feel like taking any crap from Knight Shade.
Until he gets inside of the mirror.
Then he becomes serious.
