“Does that mean that by naming a pony youre making it so their name is what theyre good at? I know the episode with Cheerilee explaining her cutie mark to Apple Bloom was supposed to address that issue but it didnt do it too well because every other pony has a cutie mark and name with no ulterior meaning.”

I always figured that, while in some cases it was luck, in most cases it was either genetics, for instance Twilight’s Cutie Mark might have had a star theme, because for example, her parents has marks like that, but it just might not have been for magic. The apple family could also qualify as this. Also I generally think someponies change their name to suit the mark, which might explain why someponies only seem to have a singular name.

The trouble is, we have seen a few ponies get their cutie marks, but there has never been any mention of their names being changed. Specifically Diamond Tiara, Twist, and Featherweight, all seemed to retain the names they had. Add to this the fact that when Applebloom got a fake cutie mark, no one suggested they start calling her “Loopy” from then on.

I’m glad someone has some sense around here.

@ the rest of you: Why do you make it so hard? There are RL cultures where you get a new name when you come of age. Why wouldn’t ponies do the same?

Yeah, I’m siding with the OP on this one, as this is something that I haven’t been able to reconcile yet.

In saying that however, it’s only really noticeable when a pony has a really on-the-nose name, like “Silver Spoon” and “Diamond Tiara”

G4 Rainbow Dash’s cutie mark is a combination of G3 Rainbow Dash’s (clouds and rainbow) and G1 Firefly’s (three lightning bolts). Faust almost certainly meant it to represent how G4 Rainbow Dash is basically G1 Firefly in G3 Rainbow Dash’s body.

This is one of the things that bothers me most; especially when people on the MLP:FiM wikia suggest names for ponies corresponding to their cutie mark. And it makes me even madder when those names get VOTED on!

@The Smiling Pony
Rainbow dash actually kept the rainbow and clouds, so I’d call it a new version of the same mark.

G4 Rarity’s mark is a new version of Sparkler’s mark, who is the other character that she was based off of. Given that the Mane Six are composite characters, you might want to look at both of the characters that they were based off of.

Twilight Sparkle’s mark looks a lot like Twilight Twinkle’s mark. G4 Rainbow Dash’s mark looks like a combination of Firefly and G3 Dash, Fluttershy’s mark is based more off of Fluttershy than Posey. Surprise and the old Pinkie had pretty much the same thing. Applejack is always Applejack, and the only question is how many.

Rarity is actually the only one of them to take from her G1 inspiration instead of her G3 namesake.

My point about marks not really changing from generation to generation stands, even if it’s a bit more complicated than I said.

Or Celestia manipulates EVERY SINGLE PONY into finding their correct destiny, like she did Twilight.
She just can’t be bothered with the CMC. I mean, they let out Discord, I say let them fester in puberty for an extra 5 years.
Background Pony #AFB5
It’s simple; Celestia (and maybe Luna, before the whole “off to the moon” thing) cast a spell over all of Equestria that makes new parents extremely likely to pick a name for their foal that is related to what their cutie mark will be in the future. It also makes the foals pretty oblivious about the otherwise obvious connection between their name and cutie mark, for the sole amusement of all the adults, who might otherwise drown the annoying little gits.

Actually, let me put forth an insane headcanon: Ponies whose names DON’T reflect their special talents were named by “wrong genre savvy” parents who tried to cheat the system by giving their foals a more favorable name. There is definitely a Smooth Talker who is a mute wallflower, a Comet Racer who isn’t a pegasus and definitely NOT an astronaut, a Jade/Diamond/other gem-y name who is utterly penniless and unremarkable, etc etc.

On the other end of the scale, ponies with stranger names are named by ponies who DON’T get the system at all.

“Cheerilee? Uh, I guess she’s good at cheering ponies up? Fuck it. Teacher. Next!”

Once you’re named, you’re a slave to fate.

It’s been my headcanon since the beginning of the show. Apple Bloom will have an apple flower thing on her ass, Scootaloo will have something scooter-related, and Sweetie Belle will have a stylized bell. Basically, every pony ever has a cutie mark directly related to their name. That’s just how it works.

If ponies figured this out, if they haven’t already, then suddenly Equestria has an influx of doctors, lawyers, astronauts and politicians, with not enough jobs in the working sector.

@Jarntazecht
And you put a picture where it’s only true for one of them…

Actually, that’s not a picture of a sunset, so it isn’t true for either of them.

Of the Manes…

There is no correlation between the names and marks of Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy. Applejack is part of the Apple family, and Rainbow has always had a Rainbow mane, meaning that their names are unrelated to their marks.

Twilight Sparkle does have sparkles in her cutie mark, but given how generic a symbol they are, connecting them specifically to her name seems like a reach, especially since they don’t involve twilight in any way.

So, of the manes, that’s maybe one with a cutie mark connected to her name. Maybe.

@Star Cavalcade
Maybe he likes writing while he’s on a couch? Pinkie likes throwing parties, but she works at a bakery, so it’s not like whatever got them their mark has to be their job.

@Lemonjack
Imagine how many ponies are out there who didn’t follow their parent’s dreams and have names completely unrelated to their special talent.

“So what’s your name?”
“Octavia.”
“And your special talent?”
“Metaphysical engineering.”

And he’ll never get it because he never gets the right combination.

Maybe be named ‘X’ puts you on a path to talent ‘Y’. Basically, you can give your new infant foal a name that will lead to their eventual talent that you wish them to have.

For example; “I want our kid to be a musician, how about we name her ‘Octavia’!”
