I dunno about that picture but research i’ve done seems to say that growing large fruit does happen (though they are smaller than they would be on a normal tree). But this isn’t too common as the most ‘usual’ bonsai apple trees are crab apple varieties, which means they made small fruit to begin with anyway.

It’s such a cliche that I hate to say it, but that photo looks like it’s been shopped… and not well. Look at the outline of the apple.
I did’t think a tree stressed that hard would hold onto its fruit! I was sure it would drop’em half way through development if not earlier, ya learn something new every day!
Hmmmm, interesting thought….
I am not sure most stunted appletrees would bare fruit they could sustain but crab apples should work and many of the more wild varities tend to be of a nature they might take reletively well to the process… Interesting, I shall look into this!
Pretty sure this can already happen if, y’know, you use an apple tree as your bonsai specimen.
