I think it takes place in the future, when Luna is just starting to reintegrate herself into society.
Until they mention Nightmare Rarity in the show, it’s an AU in my books.
I’m pretty sure the comics aren’t an entirely seperate canon.
Also, it’s my (pretty well supported) headcanon that Apple Bloom is the most book-smart of the bunch by virtue of her engineering and invention skill. Sweetie Belle is already suggested to be the wisest, anyway.
