It’s a ridiculous distinction. “Vegetarians” who eat animal products aren’t vegetarian, they just want to be special snowflakes, but lack courage of their convictions. “Vegans” are vegetarians and still want to have their snowflake status, but all those lacto- ovo- pesco- posers have ruined the cachet of the term, so they had to invent a new one.

A vegetarian is a person that eats no meat, animal by products like Cheese are ok to eat to them.
 
Vegans are people that shun all manner of byproduct made by an animal meat or otherwise.

“Vegans” are aliens in Star Trek, and I refuse to humor dumb people by pretending that anyone who eats eggs or fish or dairy products are “vegetarians”. All they are is “people who don’t eat certain kinds of meat”, but that’s not Special Snowflake enough for them, so they front like they get some sort of gated community street cred by claiming vegetarianism.
 
Ponies are clearly omnivorous herbivores; they’re mostly herbivorous and need plant-based food to survive, but can and will eat animal protein by choice or necessity. They’re like the obverse of dogs, which are omnivorous carnivores; they’re primarily carnivorous and need meat to be healthy, but will also eat literally anything they can fit in their mouths, up to and including light bulbs and manual transmission parts.
 
…Cats, by the way, are obligate carnivores, meaning that they will die if they can’t eat animal protein. All those softheaded hippy morons who feed their cats an all-vegetarian diet? Thaaat’s animal abuse.
