Given that Twilight’s mom and dad look the same age as Twilight, I don’t see why you’d think Rarity is the same age as when Spike was a kid. Not only that, but Twilight hatched him when she was probably younger than AB (AJ said she was younger than AB when she got her cutie mark, and I’m pretty sure Twilight’s no older), so there might be around a 6-7 year difference. That means Rarity’s probably 25 when Spike “comes of age” (18 for the US, though this isn’t exactly a universal age of majority) or maybe 28 if this is a Spike old enough to drink alcohol (21, to keep it all US-centric). As a 27 year old, I can assure you that there is not much difference between the look of people in their mid-to-late-20s from their late teens aside from the odd extra scar and hopefully better fashion sense unless life really kicked their butts.

Oh, I don’t think it should ever be permanent. I think it would just be used to tell the “you don’t need to be like us for us to love you” or the “love is blind” lessons, I guess.

Never have liked ponified Spike, especially if it’s implied permanent. It ruins one of the greatest things about Spike x Rarity and also is just a cheap way out of the fact that he’s a dragon amongst ponies.
