If you were a ghost, would you send the only heir you have. The only one that can presumably do your duties Since you are dead to a castle that is a proverbial death trap with nopony clearly able to take her place? Also, would you send this said heir away from her duties as SOLE RULER of EQUESTRIA to do research?
 
The episode hints heavily to a flashback. Or this could be something whipped up as an bad ending future. But NOTHING, and I repeat, NOTHING hints to Celestia meeting her end on this or any future episode.
