I think I see where they are going with this. While the Mane six have established personalities, Background ponies can be like clay to someone make out of. like how Lyra is hyper active, obsessed with humans knowing that they exist somewhere wanting to be one, and is a lesbian, while Bon-bon is vary motherly, and clear headed with any task she takes and is a lesbian. Colgate is a dentist and a lesbian. the Brown stallion with the hour glass is somehow one of the incarnations of the Doctor. . . and a lesbian.

How would you know? Pretty much NOTHING about their personalities is actually established in canon.

Why not just enjoy both worlds? Jeez people. I enjoy making up stories for the background ponies and watching the lives of the mane 6 and mane cast.

That is to say, Pinkie can be hated for being hyperactive and annoying, Fluttershy can be hated for being wishy-washy etc. Personality is a double edged sword, some people may love a certain type of character, other hate it. With BG ponies there is no such problem.

Honestly, I blame the 14-year old emos at DeviantArt and their various copies of the Alicorn Prince of Darkness “Shadow Pain McSlashWrists” with their black and red palettes for the state of affairs of OCs nowdays.

And yes, BG ponies are better if not for the fact that writers can’t mess them up.
 
Still, the secondary cast is better than both BG and main cast (Cheerilee, Mayor Mare, Big Mac). They have the best of both worlds.

Have you seen what how people react to most OC’s? Putting the personality in a pony that’s been seen on the show allows authors to avoid such knee-jerk rejection.

Many BG ponies have canon personalities. In the show Bon Bon is consistently grumpy, Lyra is consistently enthusiastic, Rumble is always shy etc. To say none of them have any personality would be fundamentally wrong.

I agree, I love fanon more than canon.  
How much I look forward, say, season 4, can not compare to how I anticipate for example the next episode of “Scootalo’s Scootaquest” or The Mentally Advanced Series.
 
lol, you guys seem upset. The way some of the comments above are trying hard to pretend hard that backgrounders are blank because they haven’t been portrayed in canon, it’s funny. :)

I like BG pones for the different ways people write them, and the way how every new piece of art adds a new small aspect to the portrayal of a pony. I’ve been observing some of these memes grow and change since season 1, and it is a kind of addiction that the main show can not give you alone. :)

Lyra isn’t obsessed with humans, or has any deep psychological scars or anything, she’s filling the background for crowd scenes. She’s a prop. She has no personality aside from the one the fandom decides to assign her with.
