That’s…only something I noticed recently. I was always under the auspices that they came to power after the Discord crisis, thus:
 
Equestria formed after the Windigo (sic?) crisis -> Celestia and Luna enter the picture either as alicorns, or whatever-they-were-beforehand, but not royalty/leaders -> Discord crisis -> Celestia and Luna ascend to leadership after defeating Discord -> NMM crisis -> et cetera

I think the reason luna and celestia looked the same with their regalia and everything is cause of the potion fusing the events of the past with Twilights interpretation of it for convince sakes .They looked AND talked the same as she would understand for her to understand it ,most of what she saw was accurate(princesses palace, discorded equestria) but other things like celestia and luna speaking modern equestrian are from her interpretion (ex.that mission in mass effect three with legion,the geth,and quarian history

Also the site where they fought Discord is south of Appaleesan Mountians, outside of Equestria.

Huh? They were already Equestria’s leaders when Discord showed up. And I don’t think that town is Ponyville.

If there was some actual continuity behind this, that’d be cool.  
Like, Ponyville is founded  
but then there’s a Discord attack  
but then two heroes show up  
then they get crowned
 
Weren’t they princesses already when they found the Element-trinkets, tho

An interesting piece of canon by the way. Celestia and Luna already had their crowns and royal regalia by the time they confronted Discord. Which means, they already were the rulers of Equestria, before Discord came to power.

They’re a long way away from Ponyville then.
