I love Return to Oz. Especially the scenes with the Nome King. He does a terrific job of being a smarmy and frightening villain. Like when he ‘thanks’ Dorothy for the gift of the ruby slippers. “I never would have been able to conquer Oz without them. Thank you, Dorothy Gale.”
Or when he discovers that Dorothy figured out his trick in the treasury. “You had her. And you let her escape… YOU HAD HER! AND YOU! LET! HER! ESCAPE!”
Watch Return to Oz if you haven’t. It’s an amazing adaptation of the second Oz book. Also if you are able enjoy something so bad it’s good, check out Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland. Yes it’s terrible, yes it has nothing to do with the source material outside of a few names, but it’s actually entertaining to see him actually try to do something fresh and original with it.
It’s like you’re reading my mind, man. If you’re going to do an adaptation, do an adaptation. Get it right, these are classics. (I don’t mind Wicked, though, for one, because it actually stayed fairly close to the original Land of Oz canon.)
Damned straight. It’s like when people do their own take on Alice in Wonderland and confuse the Red Queen for the Queen of Hearts (or worse, think they’re the same character). It’s not enough to dress the characters up like the originals or get the generic plot right.
Seriously. And it pisses me off no end when they get the details wrong. Like the Looney Tunes version a few years back, they did it with Daffy (which makes sense)–but they also showed him living in luxury. They seem to forget that Scrooge was a miser, spending as little on himself as he did on anything else and not even enjoying his wealth.
Spirit of Christmas Past: Snowdrop. Spirit of Christmas Present: Pinkie Pie. Spirit of Christmas Future: Windigo. You get the idea.
