Because reasons, apparently. I don’t know – I never really bought the explanation myself.
@Elric of Melnipony
Wait, if the same technology goes into both transporters and replicators, then why would organic molecules be an issue?
That’s terrible technobabble though.
Replicating organic molecules is kind of an all-or-nothing thing. If you can replicate them with sufficient reliability then you can make a living organism. If you can’t, then your alcohol is going to be full of methanol (makes you go blind) and your food will be full of trans-fats and other nasty shit.
If you really want to nitpick, TOS tech had fast processing of food, but didn’t have replicators in the sense of “assembling food with transporter technology”.
You can’t do that with replicators because their matter resolution is not good enough to correctly replicate organic molecules. Even the food sometimes tastes a bit “off” because of that.
@Princess♠Molestia
I’ll handle this, Pinkie.
Ms. Dash, power up front dispensers and prepare a torpedo filled with mk. 62 peppermint frosted cupcakes. Write on it: “don’t make a mess; they stain.”
(joking)
She’s luckily the rest of them enjoy her parties or otherwise her Holodeck ones would be revoked as well.
