I always thought it was the other way around. The people back then made up all those stories to make the gods a bit more relatable and not so high and mystical.
Of course, it raises even more questions when you consider that they apparently equated ‘relatable’ with ‘acting like enormous dicks with no no self-control’.
Or, one could go with the mythological interpretation. Hermes was both incredibly fast and rather unprofessional. He invented the lyre so Apollo wouldn’t kick his ass after a prank.
