Soarinjack has this right, since at this point it’s functionally just them making a jab at Hasbro owning both D&D (via their ownership of Wizards of the Coast) and MLP, as well as a nod to the fact that IDW has the license to produce comics for both.

It’s some kind of ID system, it’s based on past reports so at some point Shout Factory did make a report with something having to do with MLP, maybe some ad or something, and then the system somehow matched it with that.

I figured it was some kind of automated system, but I always assumed it was based on what was reported to them by the copyright holder, rather than Youtube themself trying to figure it out. Heh, it would be hillarious, if it wasn’t so annoying.
 
Still, you gotta love the absurdity of the situation: a licensee apparently stopping a holder from using their own materiel.

It may not even be real claims from Shout Factory, seem the newest version of their system is flagging some videos automatically based off some index of who holds what, there have been videos of reviews of things being flagged when they are covered by fair use.

It’s especially hillarious, when the official MLP YT channel have their vidoes blocked due to copyright claims from Shout Factory. Seen it a at least 2 times so far. XD

that’s the joke, ironically both MLP and these games belongs to Hasbro, but despite this, one division would throw a lawsuit at the makers of the comic for that. That’s the message, and i think it reflects the absurdity on how a large company would sue its own employees. it happened more than once.

Okay that makes sense.

I think it’s a jab at WotC, and their rather zealous approach to copyright infirngements in the past, before they became part of Hasbro. It sems to be a stable (pun not intended) of D&D humor. In “Order of the Stick” Rich Burlew introduce two lawyers to remove “infringing” elements (primarily a mindflayer and a Drizzt clone), all played for laughs. Especially consideing Flumphs (another D&D original) are featured throught out the webcomic.
 
So basically, it seems to be a variant of Biting The Hand humor

Tons of people have ripped off D&D. It defined fantasy in the same way Lord of the Rings did. I never saw them suing Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, two series that even admitted they used creatures created by D&D.

Ironically, IDW licenses and publishes both comic series, think of the crossovers!

FiM should overall dip more into D&D’s book of monsters.
