Yeah, you might be right. In fact, when the original TMNT show started, while it always had it’s silly/campy moments, the first 2 seasons were actually darker then the rest of the series. Even Bebop & Rocksteady while always being morons, were meaner, and a bit more threatening in the first season, (even a bit more competent, they successfully snuck up on the turtles, and grabbed them before in the episode “Shredded & Splintered”) ‘till they got more Flanderized in the following seasons.
 
In fact, originally they considered using Bebop & Rocksteady in the sequel movie (“Secret of the Ooze”) but the original TMNT creators didn’t want to use the toned-down versions of the characters, so they come up with 2 new mutants instead Tokka, and Rahzar.

Then again, as the ’87 show kept going, the characters grew more and more Flanderized. So there is some ground how Turtles Forever portrayed them as they did.

Hopefully the crossover between the ’87 Turtles and the ’12-14 Turtles will be a little more dignified seeing as they now have the original voice actors for ’87 Mikey, Raph, Leo and Donnie.

Yeah, the fourth-wall breaking, and such were funny, but I admit the four ‘87 turtles’ goofyness was a li’l overplayed sometimes. ’87 Donatello was at least somewhat competent, though ‘87 Leo didn’t act much like Leo to me. (Except in that one scene I pointed out.)  
Granted they had their goofy moments sometimes in the old TV show, but “Turtles Forever” kinda exaggerated it, most fans felt.  
Still, it was kinda nice to see the old show return kinda.
 
’87 Shredder & Krang seemed to have better balance with their portrayal, goofy, but not to goofy, and still had some villainous aspects about them. (Like when ’87 Shredder was enjoying on the video screen the nasty things his 2003 counterpart was doing.)
 
I do like how Hun kinda became like the 2003 version of “Slash” after being mutated. (Which they said was kinda intentional, ’cause the snake on his belt looked like a “S” kinda.) The Toka & Razar cameos were nice to, but very very very brief. (Yet, they were on the movie poster.)

In all seriousness, though, it was the O.O.C. of the ‘87 Turtles that irritated me. I didn’t mind the Shredder/Krang bickering (in fact, it reminded me of an interview where Shredder’s old VA, Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince of Bel Air, joked they retired and lived together). Raph’s fourth wall-breaking, I liked, as well as Hun’s frustrated, “Who are you talking too?!” I could also buy the 2003 Turtles being better fighters simply because they were up against vastly different foes to the ‘87 team.
 
I just couldn’t get over how out of character Leonardo and Donatello were, though.
 
The same way how I find it difficult to believe the Dash up there on the right would just quietly try to rebut the IDW Dash, as opposed to, say, yelling back they fought the Changelings back despite being caught off-guard.

Y’mean, 1987, but from what I hear Peter Laird (one of the original TMNT creators who was in charge of the series before selling the franchise to Nick) wouldn’t let them do the crossover movie unless they made fun of the older campier ‘87-‘96 show as much as possible. (From what I hear, Laird isn’t as fond as the old campy show, as most “children of the ‘90s” TMNT fans are.)
 
So if it seems like there was favoritism in “Turtles Forever,” then blame Laird.
 
To be fair though, they did a good job bringing back aspects of the old show. (Even the original character models, but sadly not the voices.)  
Some things did deserve the lampooning, such as Shredder & Krang’s bickering, (which they captured pretty well, and was in-character, especially ‘87 Shredder breaking a control panel out of anger.)  
Raphael breaking the fourth wall, and the turtles walking around in broad daylight at times not even trying to hide themselves. (Which did bug me about the old show looking back on it) So you have to admit, even the old show wasn’t perfect, and a li’l to silly/kiddy, at times.
 
In fact, remember the scene in “Turtles Forever,” with the giant mutant banana, and other weird characters scaring April?  
I heard those were actual unused character models from the old show. (I’m not sure though, they looked like the old show’s art style.)
 
I do agree, that sometimes the sillyness of the old show was exaggerated in the movie at times, ’87 Leonardo was very O.O.C., (only time he seemed in-character was when he gave that short speech about “getting serious, getting their anti-Technodrome equipment, and saving April”) ’87 Donatello seemed to be the only ’87 series turtle portrayed as competent. (And like a living deus-ex-machina, which he was in the old show at times.) Though, to be fair, they did portray them as decent fighters, even able to stand up to the 2003 villains at times.  
Even the 2003 turtles were ridiculed by their “hardcore” Mirage 1984 counterparts.
 
There was also a few cut-scenes, including one where the ‘87 turtles chastice their 2003 counterparts, and call-out the 2003 turtles’ Shredder for causing all the problems. So there were a few moments where they “got serious.”  
2003 Raph acted kinda like an A-hole to them though.

I thought it was primarily Generation 3.5 that gets that? As far as I know most Bronies rather liked Generation 1 and were at worst indifferent to Generation 2 onwards.
 
I mean, I remember enjoying the G1 My Little Pony (even if I had to shamefully keep this hidden).

I didn’t find Turtles Forever to be very entertaining, not until the Original Turtles showed up. It mostly felt like the 2003 crew were going, “ZOMG look how totally lame and dumb and stupid the old show was! LOLOLOLOL!”
 
Hell, 1986 Leo was pretty serious compared to the others, yet in Turtles Forever I’d swear his brain’d been switched with Michaelangelo’s.
