She has her moments, but honestly? There’s something in her that makes her do things like this. She doesn’t recognize it herself, and I wonder if she will.
I just hope something is changed or clarified. Rarity annoys me often (no more than other characters mind you) but I certainly don’t dislike her. As a whole she doesn’t strike me as manipulative….but damn does she have her moments.
Maybe she’s just trying to keep her feelings on the inside. Fine with what it is at the moment, and such.
I still don’t want to think of Rarity as that manipulative. I still think that deep down there’s a little bit of something that she might not even be fully aware of.
Yeah, it’s very one sided and crappy.
Well it’s a shitty relationship. If he hopes it will lead to something then clearly Rarity isn’t being honest with him…or spikes just beating a dead horse so to speak. The problem is Rarity knows that spike has a crush and is doing ridiculous favors for her because he hopes for more. She knows that, and by asking these favors of him with no intention of furthering their relationship IS manipulation. She may not be intentionally manipulating him, but she has all the information at hand to know that she is.
She wouldn’t meaninglessly ask one of her pegasi or earth pony friends to do work she could do effortlessly. Asking that work of him, simply because he’d do it is manipulative, or at the least lazy of Rarity and cruel knowing the strain it puts on him and the false hope it gives him.
I’m not saying doing favors or asking favors are wrong, but Rarity goes overboard and for terrible reasons.
Their relationship is weird, let’s leave it at that.
Again, she doesn’t take advantage, it’s just how their relationship goes, Spike will accept anything she asks him because he hopes it will lead to something. but the point is that on Rarity’s side she’s not being mean or insensitive to him (as any other interaction she has with him can confirm). Her way of thinking isn’t “oh this kid has a crush one me, let’s take advantage of him because that’s how I treat my own friends”.
I think it’s pretty clear Rarity find him nothing more than “her cute little spikey wikey”, not to mention the show would likely never delve into an inter-species relationship. So I think it’s pretty clear she won’t reciprocate.
Though technically, the show implies inter-species relationships with Minotaur’s, Mules and I’m sure others…
This is the question.
No, but maybe don’t take advantage of them liking you if you clearly aren’t going to reciprocate in any way.
Nah, it’s just a weird situation they’re in. Dunno what they’re gonna do with it.
So? When you find out about someone crushing on you it becomes an ultimatum? Either return the feelings or stop interacting with him?
Thing is, Rarity knows about his crush. That kind of muddies the water.
We both know Rarity doesn’t do that. She isn’t manipulating any feelings, Spike blindly accept what she asks him because of his crush, but to Rarity he’s just being a good friend.
Aaaand now we’re going to skip into the pool of gender politics, where accusations are thrown around wildly. Rarity’s a complex pony. The thing is that she thinks about these kinds of things. It’s not like Twilight where she’d do something like this unknowingly and is kind of scatterbrained, Rarity knows exactly what she’s doing.
Technically what you do can be in part do to what you naturally are…but that just muddies the water.
You feel pity for those fooled (or call them stupid?), you call the one fooling them a user. If someone gets a free drink at a bar because someone find them hot, meh, that’s pretty dismisable. If you drag someone on for over a year, given them hope of you returning some feelings and using those feelings to get favors…that’s just terrible.
I thought people were all into the “rewarded for what you do, not what you naturally are” line of thinking now.
When she acts like the rest of the Manehattan folk…
Honestly, that’s one of the things of the girly stereotype that I don’t hate. I mean, if a woman can use her looks to get something, and manages it, I’d say it’s impressive rather than negative. We should be looking at the people who get fooled so easily.
I mean, fuck. I guess if that’s the kind of person you are and it works for you and you don’t give a shit about the feelings of others, but…
It just seems like such a terrible part of her personality. Like her dark side. When she wants to take the easy way out and not work hard or MacGyver something together. When she fulfills the stereotype people expect her character to be.
It’s entertaining, but a terrible thing to be teaching, especially to the little kids that actually watch this show.
She’s been taking advantage of other through her good looks since S1. It’s always spun as “use what you’ve got to get what you want,” and it’s always confused me. Sure A Dog and Pony Show is entertaining, but damn if the moral isn’t bad.
Well taking advantage of others, smart move or not, doesn’t make you best pony in my book. You make it sound like she’s acceptable because we’re told that she’s supposed to be a symbol of generosity. It doesn’t matter what she’s supposed to be if she doesn’t actually show it. Not saying she doesn’t, but I wouldn’t call it acceptable behavior simply because her element says she’s (supposed to be) better than that.
