Description

Sort of an expansion on the ideas I was working out with my mahou shoujo take on Equestria Girls, set after the movie. My explanation for Spike being a talking dog when he comes through the mirror is that his EG counterpart is also a magical creature, but of a different sort: he’s a weredog. His full human form is actually quite large and powerful, though his senses, while sharper than a human’s, are nowhere near as sharp as his full dog form. He also has a hybrid form which blends the power of his human form with the sharp senses of his dog form. In a bit of a turn-around, Spike in this universe acts a bit aloof toward Rarity due to his conflicted feelings of attraction toward her and loyalty toward his “sister,” one of the villains. Rarity, meanwhile, has developed a very obvious crush on him, despite him being a sophomore while she’s a senior (he looks older due to his size and the goatee).

If only EQG used something like this instead of leaving Spike as a lowly pet dog that is badly restricted.

Letting him switch between dog and human at will would help his character in EQG immensely.

I’m sure I don’t have enough of a reference point to answer that question. I memorized the first 151 when I was 12, became familiar with a few from Gold & Silver, and everything after that is beyond my kenning.

Would I have to use Luke’s Mega stone to fight him, or would he be alright at normal power?

(Luke is a Lucario with a Pokémon form, a human form, and a dog form. I allow him to switch forms when needed, but usually have him as a dog.)

Okay, he’d definitely be able to take Fluttershy down in a one-on-one fight as long as she doesn’t pull out The Stare. He really is as strong as he looks, though, it’s just that the other girls are way stronger in their magical girl forms. Besides, confronting them one-on-one isn’t his role, he’s most effective in a support role.

…….

“he’s actually pretty outclassed and tends to just get his tail handed to him before the real monster-of-the-week arrives”

You know, the line between OP and “complete wakling” doesn’t have to be that thin.
You didn’t have to make him an absolute wimp just so he isn’t as strong as he looks.

My “dog” is an excellent fighter (as expected from a Pokémon), but tends to fall rather easily.
I think I might consider introducing him to this Spike and see what happens.
He could always use the training.

He’s not really OP in context. He’s strong, but no more than Applejack, and he has doglike senses, but this is set at a time after the movie where Sunset and the others are discovering their magical girl forms through their link with their world’s Elements of Harmony. He might be able to take Fluttershy down in a one-on-one fight (as if he’d be able to bring himself to), but he’s actually pretty outclassed and tends to just get his tail handed to him before the real monster-of-the-week arrives. He’s more The Mole than anything.

My… companion Luke the Lucario has a human form with fingerless gloves. He also has a dog form that I’ve had him use lately.

This version of Spike is a bit OP, and mature for my taste. Looks good, though

Spike isn’t a pet, he’s more like the Mane6’s “little brother”. Winona is a pet. It would’ve made much sense for him to become a young boy in EQG, but they needed him to be a dog for a reason: To make Twilight’s unlikely story more belieavable for her friends.

Even with the overall tone of the movie (yeah…) it would’ve been too unrealistic if her friends just accepted her saying she was a pony princess from some magical world. A talking dog corroborating your story though? At least gives you the benefit of the doubt.

This would probably make sense if it was a dream, like that time in A Dog and Pony Show

Except that Spike is never treated like a pet. Recall that he’s not part of the ponies’ pet play date, and he’s put in charge of the pets. He’s treated as sort of the “kid brother” of the group, at worst, which can overlap with how one treats pets, but isn’t the same. Spike could have been portrayed as Twilight’s little brother or something and there would have been little difference from how he is treated in the Mane U.

I grew a goatee around that age, actually, though I was a junior due to starting school a year early. It wasn’t all that unusual at the time.

It saddens me that Twilight has ruined the classic heroine falls for villain with a heart of gold plot even though Twilight actually doesn’t contain such a plot. In fact, this is closer to a Sailor Moon plot, though it actually takes a back seat to Sunset Shimmer and EG Twilight’s foe-yay.
