Apology accepted. We all have moments where we slip up. The fact that you recognized it and apologized means a lot. I wish more people would approach misunderstandings that way rather than trying to justify themselves and continue raging.

In this thread: actual civil debate.

But seriously, it’s really cool to see that even on the internet, people can take the time to clear up misunderstandings and have a real discussion.

seems while I slept a whole thing started up and settled down, a very uninternety thing to happen, usually these sorta things escalate quickly! The fact that it didn’t makes me smile! Everyone, have a puppy!

You also might wanna learn to type and edit faster. It’s like watching a deaf grandpa try to debate, each response is to the talking point before last.

…And I did it again. You were only trying to urge me to calm down Zincy. Now I owe you a personal apology. I am sorry for my behavior this night. I don’t know what’s wrong with me right now. I’ll go to bed early and try to be more approachable in the morning.

@Zincy
Okay, seriously, please stop patronizing me or I really am gonna start ragging on you. I let a lot of bottled up indignation out over a misunderstanding, and owned up to it from voices, both outer and inner, but yours was definitely not one of them.

…I invite you to lick to the mud off the soles of my boots, and go crawling back to the shrines of your long-abandoned wicked spirits, filthy animistic heathen.
(I kid, I kid, but wow, could you imagine how much of an asshole you would have looked like If I had put that second response up 30 seconds earlier)

See was that so hard? Don’t take everything personal, will get you torn up quick like.

Folk’s are gonna have opinions, and they aren’t always going to be what you like. But you gotta accept that the shoe can be on the other foot. I could share some horror stories about the supposed “faithful” and what they’ve done to me. Don’t mean I’m going to go after every Christian I see.

I… I apologize, it’s just that I saw a lot of what I thought, irrationally in hindsight, was bashing of religious education set of by assumption that places like the Jesus Camp are the norm. And they’re not, but you wouldn’t think they were with the way mainstream media like to put religious institutions on a public gibbet. I’ve spent my whole life, from the time when I was 14 and made a personal decision to make God a part of my life, painfully aware of just how hateful the modern world is of spirituality, how the average person on the street now doesn’t have the foggiest idea of how important the Church was in shaping the society he is a part of today, how you can barely mention Jesus or the Church in a positive way to a crowd without being jeered or screamed back into a dark corner. I just saw red this time, and that was extremely wrong of me. You had good things to say, policies that many groups have not yet accepted, but should have long ago. I shouldn’t have assumed of the bat that it was meant to tear at the church.

…Still though, the way you phrased your responses made it sound like you thought no religious institution taught a way of thinking that wasn’t part of their codified doctrine.

Settle down bub, no need to get your bible in a knot. No one here was bashing religion. Shit man, I’m just admitted to being a member of one of the most laughed at faiths. You know how many people ask me if I’ve been accepted to Hogwarts? The most they know about Paganism is the fat, tumblr Wiccan’s that like to think they’re our guiding majority. Despite the fact that they pretty much co-opted everything they have from Celtic Druidism. And don’t get me started on the image those “left-hand path” folks have left for us, can’t go anywhere without being called a Satan worshiper because of all the symbology those guys stole from us.

Now, if you want to settle down and actually talk like you’re not on the rag, then we can all have a merry old time. If not than you can kiss my Pagan ass.

Dude, chill. I am Christian. I think that the school you attended has a really good idea of the correct way to handle those things. Christians should be taught real, actual science and not BS about the devil hiding dinosaur bones or whatever. I know that the Catholic church is cool with evolution, I know about Gregor Mendel, and I know that monasteries are responsible for And I am fully aware that there are Christian institutions that do in fact teach a wide variety of accurate stuff about science and non-Christian religions. And that’s awesome. They should. Nobody should be brainwashed into believing anything, ever. I’ve attended several of them and I’m incredibly glad that they didn’t try to propagandize me into believing BS.

Reread my comments; I’m not trying to dump on any religion or philosophy. My entire point was that ignorance, whether perpetrated by Christians, Atheists, Pagans, Discordians, Buddhists, whoever, is BAD. I wasn’t trying to single out Christianity as somehow being the root of all the world’s problems or that it’s any more ignorant than any other religion or system of beliefs. Every group has people who are ignorant of what the other groups are really saying, and that needs to end. It’s not something that needs to focus on specific groups. It applies to every group, because every group is comprised of people, and a lot of people are idiots, and are therefore in every group.

TL;DR version: Nobody, no matter what religion or philosophy, should force their beliefs on anyone. People should be educated about it and allowed to decide for themselves.

Also, this is a bizarre conversation to be having over a gif of kids crying tears of joy over Derpy. :p

Yeah, look at all of you, you’re all so enlightened aren’t you?

You know what? You’re right; fuck those ignorant Christian institutions, all they’ve ever done is try to pull civilization down intellectually.
Never mind the fact that the original monasteries were one of the few well-preserved and organized education centers and document archives in the Western World after the fall of the Roman Empire. Never mind the fact that the oldest European universities were founded and backed by the Church. Never mind the fact that a monk first came up with the idea of genetic inheritance. Never mind that a Catholic priest was the guy who proposed the Big Bang theory. Never mind that private religious academies regularly out-preform the public school system. It’s so obvious that organized religion is what is keeping people from being educated.

While I’m posting this; I’d also like to share some personal experiences from my time at the Catholic High-school I attended.
In my four years at Holy Trinity, I took year-long Chemistry, Physics, and two separate Biology courses. They also offered classes on Economic Theory and Electoral Government Practices, on top of the regular history courses. There was only one required Theology class, and the upperclassmen spent the first quarter studying religions outside the monotheistic faiths (juniors learned about Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism and the like, Seniors were devoted to Greco-Roman philosophy and the various beliefs of Native Americans, Celtics, etc. Both classes also had a month-long project in the winter over the other Abrahamic beliefs, and Zoroastrianism). That’s what you were advocating right? Expanded horizons, cause you obviously aren’t aware of anything beyond your ill-informed, pre-conceived notions? Well, good news! They’ve already been providing it for a long time.

Sitting on your pedestal and getting all self-righteous over a long-discontinued indoctrination camp that provoked outrage from even other Evangelical organizations doesn’t make you a defender of tolerance and the common intellectual, it just shows you’re bigots too, just ones too lazy to actively go out and indoctrinate people yourselves.

Sorry, I just tried to cover the majority. Pagans could be included too. There are tons of different religious groups out there, and it would be impossible to cover all of them, so I just went with the ones that are generally considered mainstream. Ideally we’d want to cover everything, but practically that would be impossible.

tbh, Id opt to be a pre-schism Jedi or Je’Daii but that would require that I posses force powers and sadly its still a no-go on that one…

Always those 4, it’s always those 4. Don’t mind us Pagan’s over here, we’re only the 3rd fastest growing denomination in the world. We’ll just sit here and…play with flowers I guess. Since that’s about the extent of knowledge most people have of us.

I’d say more of a early level philosophy and logic class, more on the level with a history and culture course. Calling it a companion course to biology implies there’s a dichotomous relationship, and last I checked no religion denies biology.

I third this motion. Everybody should really have at least a basic understanding of the tenents of say Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism and what separates the various denominations. One of the main causes of bigotry is that the members of one group misunderstanding what the other groups believe and generalizing based on that rather than actually taking the time to figure out what’s going on.

Have to agree with you there. Such a class should be in schools.

Nothing that says “Hey man. Jesus, Buddha, Zues is the way to Nirvana, man.” Just something teaching students about the religions themselves, their workings, and what they entail.

Essentially, a companion class to Biology
