Oh, come off it and go back to Tumblr. No “background” has a monopoly on any “behavior”. If I like something, I’ll adopt it; that’s how culture works. Cultures have been exchanging ideas for millenia; the kind of cultural isolationism you’re advocating leads to nothing but stagnation.

There’s a difference between learning the norms of a social group because you value them and wish to adopt those applicable to you, which is flattering and will be encouraged by the social group in question, and displaying such norms despite (a) not understanding them, which is cultural appropriation at its worst (especially engaging in behaviors that don’t apply to someone of your background), or (b) not valuing them, which is outright mockery and minstrelsy. It’s the difference between learning what fork goes first* to make a good impression at a business dinner, and faking a Hahvahd accent at a business interview.
 
I’m from Texas and have family who have farmed. Rarity’s hick show actually got me hot under the collar at points during this episode, as it obviously did Applejack. In fact, Applejack basically called Rarity out on this by saying she’d be happy to teach Rares farm chores if she was still remotely interested in them after Trenderhoof had left.

I took it the moral as “don’t force yourself to be something you’re not”. Just because Rarity’s parents are a certain way doesn’t mean she has to be the same way.
 
Also, I’ve done things I’ve regretted in an attempt to fit in better with a certain group of people. It was never who I was, and I never felt good about it, and it doesn’t convince anyone. (Like Rarity’s fake accent.)
 
Truly, trying to downplay who you are just causes people to like you for all the wrong reasons. When they find out who you really are, then all kinds of stupid drama results, friendships tend to fall apart, and it generally wastes everyone’s time.

She could have been doing it for herself, using upper class mannerisms because they feel more right to her than common ones do

“macro” tag is for giant ponies, not image macros.

Being classy, or imitating the lifestyle of the elite, is a basic part of her personality.

Rarity made herself into someone she could be happy to be, almost threw that away to be someone she wasn’t happy being for someone who didn’t like the real her, and realized the error she was making.

It wasn’t just because she wanted to escape her commoner origins (though that is a part of it). Rarity elevated herself because she wanted to. For herself. NOT for a man.
 
More importantly, she does it for business. Such petty things get thrown out the window when it comes to earning a living. Nopony in her line of work would give her the respect she deserves if she acted like a country bumpkin.
 
And frankly, despite being from Ponyville, she clearly doesn’t come from “bumpkin” stock; her parents - uncouth though they may be - certainly aren’t poor.

the morals on this show tend to be vague and simple. they dont have the room to say “dont change yourself for others, unless you’re an asshole, then by all means change”

…except she wasn’t born with her parents’ mentality and was probably revolted by it enough to become the lady she currently is. Her upper-class manners are her personality, not an attempt to hide commoner origins.

Wasn’t her whole plan of turning a small country town into a high-class fancy affair to impress Trend in the first place?
