It was meant to highlight an inconsistency in the “Copenhagen interpretation” of quantum mechanics. One part of the theory says that the cat must be in an indeterminate state, until observed, while another part says that macroscopic objects cannot be indeterminate.

Schrödinger’s point was that a theory that makes two diametrically opposite predictions for the same experiment is clearly flawed.
