Scrounge sums it up well. It’s plausible Pinkie was just being a stupid idiot for a while.

I didn’t think it was out of character, per se… Pinkie’s always had her highs and lows… But I think it’s fair to say that it wasn’t Pinkie’s finest moment in terms of sensitivity or supportiveness.

I suppose if one ignores all the times she has accurately deduced when a pony isn’t having a good time, like, for example, two episodes ago, then that explanation would be acceptable. Or we could accept it as an example of poor writing and leave it at that.

I still think it’s just a matter of Pinkie seeing the world like Pyro sees the world, and not understanding that everyone else doesn’t see it that way too; she really came across to me like she thought she was helping. Maybe she thought it was confidence-boosting or inspiring to lay out all of the personal horror stories Fluttershy might encounter, so their impact would be blunted? Pinkie Logic is not like Earth Logic.

Yeah, this is what I have been thinking, granted it was a bit maxed out even for her in the ep but maybe she forgot to take her pills that morning or something.

Being somewhat oblivious is one thing, but she this pushed her into full-on sociopathy. She’s shown enough empathy before that it’s unreasonable to assume that she wouldn’t have figured out that what she was doing would freak any_body out. Heck, I used to sing solo on stage regularly, and that kind of talk would have made _me nervous.

I didn’t get “deliberately hurtful” from this at all; Pinkie was clearly confused and upset when it was pointed out to her that Fluttershy was freaking all the way out about it. She obviously has some fairly severe emotive/communicative impairments, and I’m starting to wonder if the whole reason she’s so obsessed with making everypony SMILE! SMILE! SMILE! is that a smile is the only emotional expression she can really understand.

Her aggressive attempts to cheer people up always seem to be about trying to force them to “get over themselves”, though. Pinkie’s whole deal comes from being convinced with absolute certainty that she knows the best way for everyone to have fun, and all along she’s acted like that Ultimate Party Plan is something that should be super obvious to everyone else, too. She was annoyed as hell when nobody would pay attention to her in Swarm Of The Century, because come on, of course you can only stop parasprites with polka, everybody knows that, right? I am just not seeing this deliberate cruelty that y’all are talking about, not at all. It really bothered her to hear that she was freaking Fluttershy out; if she was being intentionally mean about it, I would have expected her to have a look on her face more like she did when she was SHARK ATTACKing Big Mac at the Turkey Call. She just has a real problem understanding the emotions of others when laughter isn’t involved.

Well, this is with Fluttershy though. People tend to go a bit nuts whenever anyone is remotely mean to her.

Eh, I’d say the only example that’s an actual correlation is the Luna Eclipsed one, and there she only acted that way because she didn’t realize Luna wasn’t “in” on the joke. The other examples were either very up-front attempts to cheer other ponies up, even if it didn’t necessarily work out, or Pinkie Pie just being herself and other ponies reacting out of ignorance. In this latest ep, she seemed almost deliberately cruel.

I have to agree with OP. I was actually thinking about this earlier today, and realized the same thing: she really HAS always been this way.

pinkie is that one friend who tries really really hard to help you and make you happy but often says the wrong things or messes up.  
i really like pinkie, she does what she does because she cares.
