They didn’t usually spread out, though a few special toys did have some cutie marks like that. They did have rather large marks, though. Definitely bigger than G4 marks.
Ask for the hair, I have to admit that I do not know. I’ve never owned a G4, unfortunately. It doesn’t mean much, but judging by eye, the steel wool description probably comes from the aging process: back when the toys were new, it was probably soft, but rough handling from kids and just general aging can make toy hair rough. I know that from buying some vintage dolls.
…Did they all have their cutie marks (assuming that they were called that back then) spread out across the entire body like that?
Also, I’ve heard people compare the “hair” on the G1 brushable ponies to steel wool. How accurate is that?
