Yea, McCarthy is a liar saying Twilight won’t outlive her friends. May not happen this season, but it will happen eventually. Hasbro pays the bills and thus they pull the strings. We’ll get to a point where they want a whole new series, and they want to keep Twilight as a transitional piece.
 
Celestia reclaims a lost kingdom, Twilight takes over Canterlot, and she fosters a new group of mane6 after the first group asses away except for her. They’ll be some BS response of “Her friends never really pass away if she keeps their memories alive.”
 
Or they’ll do something akin to Disney’s Hercules and she puts up a memorial for them in the stars.

The only crime here would be Rarity finding this disaster fashionable.

It does make sense. The word Twilight means both the fall and rise of the sun. And it does bring Celestia to mind.
 
I would prefer that the look is temporary like a super saiyan (ease of animation and all.) But I wouldn’t be too miffed.

I think that this was supposed to be an “artistic representation” showing that the paintings in the book weren’t photo realistic.  
Notice that the wings of the sisters in the book are the same color of their hair.

That’s actually an interesting question: during the flashback potion sequence, was Celestia’s mane actually polychromatic, or did it only look like that because that’s what Twilight is familiar with?
