Like maybe (big stretch, bear with me) the whole morphing ability is symbolic of them shedding their humanity to win. Becoming an monster to defeat monsters.

I know they’re not really “obscure”, but I really love the Animorphs series.  
From face value, you would expect them just like “ZOMG, I CAN TURN INTO ANIMALZ” type of series, but they actually turned into a really deep look at the moralization and dehumanizing effects of war.

Agreed…if only I could remember the names of them (even if I did, most of the ones I like are from Australia/New Zealand, thus would be unfamiliar to peoples not from those countries)
