Platonic friendships is of course the main theme, they aren’t going to change that, but they aren’t going to erase romantic inclinations from the show either. Not just Shining and Cadense, Spike and Rarity have an odd accepted romance(at least in S2 and the comics), even though their is an age and race gap between them. I believe the term is ‘budding boyfriend’, and its not a common nonplatonic trope by any means. While I doubt they are going to ever address sexual tension between normally platonic same-sex friends directly in the show, it doesn’t stop them from playing with it indirectly or introducing obviously gay platonic and non-platonic friends like Gilda. And, I’ve said this before, we only know so much about their human counterparts.

Walking away with that impression means I have shipping goggles? That’s an opinion and nothing more.

And its a rather biased and uncredible opinion considering you already admitted you’d ‘prefer’ to use Occum’s Razor to assume EVERY scene the writers write is based on platonic interest only. Even though you admitted they probobly do fool around with the script a little every now and then for kicks to make non-platonic implications after I pointed out your bias, your bias still exists.

I’d rather just stick to analysis myself. I like to keep an open mind, not stick Occum’s Razor up my ass to make huge assumptions.
@OneOverTwo

Unlike you Poptard, OneOverTwo is fully open of his similar mindset, but actually apologized if it comes across as close-minded or jerkish. I respect him for that. The sad irony is that I said my apologies and extended my olive branch to YOU, but instead HE was the bigger man and actually took it.

So formally, OneOverTwo, I apologize if I came across as rude or jerkish to you as well. I just wanted to make my point loud and clear, and I don’t know when you guys assumed I was trying to say the stuff I was saying was ‘AppleDash is canon!’ or something crazy like that, just relatively high probability based on the scenes between two alternates, that’s all. No hard feelings OneOverTwo? Brohoof? :)

The show primarily focuses on being a clever family show for all ages under the guise of a kids show. The writing has shown time and time again to be FAR more adventurous, darker and smarter then initial belief.

Near the end of Princess Twilight Sparkle, instead of pointing out the ‘your friends might need your help’ speech, Discord makes a deep psychological comment about not only did Twilight consider her life over others, the other 5 were sharing a life-bonding adventure without her…and that’s what sprung Twilight into action. It was an ingeniously insidious way of making Twilight do the right thing for not the absolute most perfect decision.

Chysalis’ plan for Twilight was to psychologically torture her, as Cadense, to the point where she was firing magic at lethal force, and torture her till she snapped and found the real Cadense and finally killed her in a fit of rage. It was BEYOND sadistic, and it was not something the kiddies would ever fully comprehend until they were older.

I could go on like this all day. The writers are not amateurs, they hit some deep psychological points that are very real.

All I’ve been saying is that you’re having a case of shipping goggles, then the argument started where you said you didn’t have them in and the UST is off the charts. I pointed out that given the series focus on platonic friendships and being a kids’ show, viewing situations through romantic paradigms is definitely a case of shipping goggles.

I’m not denying that whatever ambiguous situation happened. I’m saying that walking away with that impression indicates one wearing those goggles.

You certainly gave off the air of someone who thinks “Appledash must be canon!”

It seemed like you were trying to make people agree with that.

You didn’t make it clear that you don’t think it to be canon, even if you tried & you seemed to be firm in believing that Applejack & Rainbow Dash were romantically inclined to one another.

What I, personally, was trying to say was that in the context of the show & Equestria Girls in particular there aren’t really any lesbian relationships presented, just the relationships between friends.

To be honest the show itself is mostly aromantic with only two pairs openly teased at at all instead of being a pair at introduction. & neither actually became a real pairing.

I’m just saying that there’s nothing going on between two characters, I was using Rainbow & Applejack for example, unless it’s explicitly stated so.

Go ahead & enjoy fan-works where the characters are made to have clear sexual orientations, I just meant that you shouldn’t believe that the show itself is directly telling you that any of the characters are something they might not be.

I’m not trying to be a jerk about it, but if that’s what I’m coming off as: sorry…

@Poptard
There are many scenes that can be interpreted as flirty or even sexual tension-esque.
But did you forgot my VERY first comment about this comic above was “both have a possibility”? Your initial comment about this picture was FILLED with scorn just because someone made a fan comic about this alternative but potentially true possibility of what she was going to say.

Honestly for this scene, I’d say the odds of her actually saying something about being a lesbian or liking a girl were 30% or 20% or lower. Not super likely, but definitely not impossible.

What I was trying to do with the Equestria Girls example is a scenario, reactions, and style choices for the scene…all seem to indicate far higher probability of absolute indication of a lesbian couple being implied. Do I think any of the pony Mane 6 are dating each other? No. Cause its unbelievably unlikely. I was only discussing probability, not proof. I was weighing the romantic solution against other people’s ideas, and I constantly admitted there were good points within them. I was just weighing the possibilities.

Maybe it was a miscommunication error between us. Maybe neither of us said the words ’its possible but etc…” enough that we BOTH thought each other the close minded person, when in reality neither of us were. I already showed you a couple of my examples, I think you had a couple of your own, but maybe we got so caught up in proving the other person wrong we forgot to add that very important detail enough times. Truce?

@Poptard
Wait, did you just say,

“You aren’t even considering that there might be a non-romantic explanation for those situations.”

Okay, now I know you weren’t paying attention to what I was saying. Lets do a playback.

“Only in EG did they actually seem to imply that the human two were ‘’‘possibly’’’ a couple at THAT point.”

“a)intentional or b)accidental implications. EG seems like a classic case of good writers doing a complete rush job due to producers, ‘’‘it could be either’’’, like I said in the beginning”

I’m only trying to point it out as a legitimate possibility. You seem to be trying to deny its possibility entirely.

I’m not saying I use the Occam’s method all the time. I recognize that there are plenty of scenes that look pretty suspicious, probably intentional evev, and even I sometimes jump in on the fun. The thing I’m saying about shipping goggles is that you also need to be able to take them off. You aren’t even considering that there might be a non-romantic explanation for those situations. I generally don’t care if what fanon you have, but it becomes an issue where you replace canon with fanon.

I’m saying that Rainbow Dash was tricked & dragged a bunch of people to a place that was probably empty, that’s a good reason to get frustrated at someone. Imagine that you’ve told a bunch of people about this thing that totally exists & when you try to take them to it you take them to nothing, likely making them mad at you. But it’s not your fault, it’s the fault of the friend who told you that that thing would be there on that day.

I was trying to say that Applejack’s actions weren’t dependent on her being mad at Rainbow, but dependent on her being mad at someone she thought was a friend.

I’m not against gay relationships, I’m just saying that you shouldn’t stretch things to make as little sense as possible so long as it makes it gay.

& what was the topic change again?
CronoM

@OneOverTwo
HUH!?

“Rainbow was tricked to hate as much as Applejack was tricked to hate. Rainbow was told that Applejack’s back sale was on a different day than it actually was.”

Wait what? You just completely went through the roof there, man. That’s something Applejack was invested in, not RD. AJ was relying on RD, not the other way around. And was there any deleted footage of RD being distrustful?

Are you just reaching now?

“So unless Applejack was in a romantic relationship with all of her friends, I don’t think she was with Rainbow Dash.”

Oh yeah, your reaching real bad. I even tried to change the subject with you to something more interesting, but you want to stretch things to make as little sense as possible so long as its not gay.

See ya.

I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch due to how extremely stubborn she is. If they’re just friends I find that to be more of reason to not confirm facts due to there being less closeness.

Rainbow was tricked to hate as much as Applejack was tricked to hate.

This is probably one of those times where the out of earshot commentary was used so that they wouldn’t have to actually write out the apology.

Sunset did do something to make Rainbow Dash distrust Applejack: Rainbow was told that Applejack’s back sale was on a different day than it actually was.

If any of Applejack’s other friends were put in the same spot as Rainbow Dash, Applejack would probably act nearly the exact same way to them. So unless Applejack was in a romantic relationship with all of her friends, I don’t think she was with Rainbow Dash.

Applejack was working on emotion, is very stubborn, was seemingly betrayed, doesn’t seem to take kindly to that & being made to seem like a liar. If you had a close friend that was just a friend & they did something that hurt you in some way & you don’t want to be friends with someone who would do that & you’re the kind of person who doesn’t try that hard to check facts that doesn’t mean you had been in a romantic relationship with them, it just means you don’t want to be friends with a bad person.
CronoM

@Poptard
Applying Occam’s ‘Razor’ when your full intention is to stay Genre-‘Blind’ will give you a really bad shave.

You desire a world where the writers of MLP:FiM would never put anything flirty between the Mane 6. Only then can Occam’s Razor be used to prove most of the scenes have no flirting intentions at all. It is an idealistic, puritanical world you desire that will remain completely unfounded. Heck, certain countries edited out certain lines of dialogue from Gilda, or the episode all-together, when Hasbro told the Hasbro translation teams that Gilda was a dyke-stereotype(non-insult) that had a crush on Rainbow Dash. While it wasn’t between the Mane 6, it was a lesbian crush a character had on one of the main characters under the intent of also being best friends at the time.
CronoM

@OneOverTwo
My apologies, I meant ‘tricked to hate.’ They all got tricked because their human versions were conveniantly stupid(again).

I won’t say your wrong about AJ’s persona, but I think that’s a stretch that she would stay unfriends with RD that long without confirming the facts. Again, if they were just friends, AJ would of sought out the truth, and RD could of easily clarified the issue. The relationship psychology gives clarity to AJ’s reaction.

The time and effort excuse is often dealt with with 1) the person approaching the person, 2) the person telling they have something to say, 3) A transition sequence, 4) The other person’s reaction.

When they do an ‘out of earshot’ omission, along with naive guessing commentary, its usually for another purpose.

Like I said before, your theories are good, but they don’t answer everything.

But enough about whether it was a)intentional or b)accidental implications. EG seems like a classic case of good writers doing a complete rush job due to producers, it could be either, like I said in the beginning.

On a side note, if Sunset ever tried to do anything to make RD distrust AJ, it didn’t come up. She’s the genre savvy one, and didn’t seem surprised that Sunset was behind the disaster. If anything, I was surprised that RD didn’t stuff Sunset in her locker every time she picked on Fluttershy or one of her teammates. She’s the captain of every sports team, in the pecking order, a prom queen with two goons means nothing to her. The only reason she would back off is if Sunset had something on her….oh. Shit.

(Wow. I’m not going to say that’s canon, but you gotta admit, that would make a pretty legit backstory fanfic for the reason behind RD’s inaction. Sunset was blackmailing human RD into not interfering with her school-wide bullying directly or she would out RD and AJ as gay publicly. That’s just wrong…)

… I think you’re still wearing those goggles, son. Considering scenes through the lens of the idea of “these guys are a couple” pretty much guarantees you’re wearing them, and saying it’s “impossible” to not view things as flirty and saying that the only reason they didn’t confirm your theories was “an omission” only serves as further proof.

Try applying Occam’s Razor to remove your goggles. In a show about six friends being friends with little romance, if there’s any “flirty” moment can be interpreted as six friends being friends with no romance, then it’s probably just friends being friends.

Applejack is more emotional than logical in the first place & is extremely stubborn. The amount of time that they spent as non-friends probably increased how bad Applejack thought Rainbow Dash was. & while Applejack knew it was Sunset’s fault at the start of the conversation in the soccer field, Rainbow Dash didn’t so she might’ve been stand offish then. Rainbow was tricked by Sunset Shimmer: She was told that Applejack’s bake sale was on a different day. & the scene was probably shown from only on perspective to save time & effort.
