It’s like skydiving. If you follow basic safety protocols, it’s awesome. If you don’t, you will die horribly. And occasionally you’ll take all of humanity with you. Heck, the guy deals in genetics and magic for a living; you just know some of his buddies were whipping up serious cosmic horror stuff before he got fired, yet they’re not the ones who doom us all.
