Which, again, was a concept the scriptwriters picked up from that old dino-theory. But hey, it’s not like anyone’s dissected an FiM dragon for our education, so speculate away.

The whole ‘second brain’ thing actually stems from an old, long-discredited dino theory, so not sure it’d apply to dragons. Unless, of course, they’ve got extra heads like King Ghidorah or something.
Well what of the barbs not being fully there. You know the Bat flight suit from the new Bat Man movies where electromagnetic causes it to fold out? Maybe the barbs form with arousal. And they, with precise control of blood flow from the second brain, can draw from surrounding barbs to increase individual barbs lengths. >.> Though they are dull headed to keep from injuring others. This is all more my own head canon and a practiced method on paper.
Yeah, FiM dragons do seem a bit more lizardy, what with the quadruped posture & forked extendo-tongues. On the other hand, Hatchling! Spike was sucking his thumb, thus suggesting they might be milk-producers. Which might make ’em closer to therapsids (mammal-like reptiles contemporary with early dinos).
…so srsly, your guess is as good as mine.
I’d have thought birds bear some influence as to what dragon dongs would look like, but I’m probably thinking of dinosaurs. :j
Probably thinking of hard spiny ‘barbs,’ when they might just be ‘ribbed for pleasure’ (i.e. soft). It varies quite a bit from RL snake/lizard species to species, apparently.
