Scarcity

In my headcanon, the ponies behind Equestria Digital Cable originally experimented with over-the-air broadcasting. Ponies living between Canterlot and Manehattan reported very faint square waves of magic visible just before Princess Luna raised the moon. This proved rather unsettling to most, and Equestria Digital Cable pursued more technological means of broadcasting. (I’m sorry if this offends anyone.)
