I admittedly didn’t like “North” either as a kid. Even that young it rubbed me the wrong way.
Yeah, even Bluth’s “bad” movies have good animation/art, at least. Bluth said he feels “Troll” was a hugely missed opportunity. Bluth also disliked his other “bad” movies, and stated he hates the video sequels to his movies too. (Which he had nothing to do with, though he worked on “Bartok the Magnificent,” probably so it’d be a li’l better.)
And yeah, “Dragon’s Lair” was actually a revolutionary game for it’s day. I watched a Youtube video about an old report on the game or something. During an interview, Bluth stated he believes that possibly video games had potential to become a new form of storytelling. He actually predicted the furure of the game industry.
Ebert was notoriously difficult to please sometimes xD . Siskel and Roeper both tended to go easier on the films they reviewed. At least Ebert called it spot-on with North, his most despised film ever.
As for A Troll in Central Park, I dunno, there’s a great deal of things that’d have to happen in order to make that one even remotely palatable. Ratchet down the whimsy, remove the aggravating little sister entirely, give the villain some additional screentime, and maybe give the main character some depth aside from “he likes plants” =P . If I’m going to say anything positive about it at all, it looks gorgeous, but that’s practically a given because it’s Bluth. Everything the man ever animated looks breathtaking, general film quality notwithstanding. Hell, the entire reason people don’t get more angry while playing Dragon’s Lair is because the death animations are hilarious and just wonderful to watch.
I think even with his more child-friendly stuff he didn’t talk down to kids, and were still pretty dark, and some serious things too.
I remember in “An American Tail” when Fievel was forced to work in a sweatshop by Warren T. Rat, (nice pun name, eh?) which sadly really did happen to poor immigrants when the movie takes place in the 1890s.
Roger Ebert said the movie was “too depressing for kids,” (I swear that guy doesn’t like anything) but I think Fievel’s struggles, and stuff made the happy ending more worthwhile, and happier as a result. Seriously, that movie still almost brings me to tears sometimes.
Plus it wasn’t all grimdark, there were plenty of happy, and funny moments. Bluth really had a nack for balancing the dark, and cuteness.
Even Don was displeased with “A Troll in Central Park.” He said it might’ve been better if said troll had to struggle with his own dark issues/nature. If gone that direction, it might’ve been more like Shrek.
Edited
His two most adult works are probably Titan A.E. and Secret of NIHM. In making them darker, he pretty much ensured their timelessness, not letting “child-friendliness” get in the way of the stories that he wanted to tell.
In one, the Earth gets destroyed. In the other, a single mother must try to save the life of her dying son. If they were dumbed down in order to keep kids from getting scared they would have lost all the narrative power that they possessed.
But yeah, as much as I love the man, Don has a few stinkers under his belt too. A Troll in Central Park immediately comes to mind. Rock-a-Doodle might have been a mess and just kind of all-over-the-place in its content, but A Troll is very easily his worst work. There’s only so much whimsy I can take before I feel the murder urges begin to consume me.
I agree, it also mixes 2D & 3D animation very well. Something you rarely see nowadays sadly.
It also felt a bit more dark, and “grown-up” then most of Bluth’s works, (and the PG rating actually meant something back then) which was a welcome change of pace, after studios toned down some of his movies.
Dude, Titan A.E. is criminally underrated. The story was solid, the setting was super cool, the characters were all a ton of fun, and the animation was spectacular.
Whenever a friend mentions never having seen it I always recommend it.
Oh, well I hope that doesn’t hurt it.
the movie is with netfilx
Maybe he should’ve gone to Netflix, but then again, there is recent drama over a certain creepy controversial movie I don’t wish to name, nor discuss. So alot of people would probably miss it if it’s limited to that one streaming service, and it wouldn’t do well.
Yeah, sadly Bluth is pretty old now, so he probably can’t do as much as he used to.
We know hes producing it but we don’t really know if hes in it yet.
Seeing how dirk the daring was betrayed in the pitch Reynolds is definitely a good fit.
This is just a theory but I think its switch to live action was because of Bluth’s age As Netflix does seem to be pretty supportive of 2D animation they even released a proper 2d animated movie last year And even managed to get its nominated for an Oscar
Yeah, you said Ryan Reynolds would be in it.
Shame it can’t be 2D animated like Bluth originally wanted.
I think He is still working on the dragon’s lair movie even if it’s not animated anymore
Those movies were all great. I like Don Bluth too.
Yeah, Don Bluth’s movies were great, I’m a huge fan of ‘em. (Despite a few ‘90s bombs, though I admit I have a soft spot for “Rock-a-Doodle” as weird as that movie was. “Anastasia” wasn’t bad either.)
It’s a shame he hasn’t done a movie sense “Titan A.E.” (Which was underrated IMO.)
I rewatched “All Dogs Go To Heaven” (still adore it) and I’m shocked it got away with so much back then, and is still rated G. Dogs gambling, stealing, drinking alcohol. (And Charlie’s nightmare.) Stuff you don’t even see in most PG-rated “family movies” nowadays.
They even had a part wher Charlie says “damn” in the official soundtrack. (Which you can find on Youtube.)
Edited
It’s forgivable, yo. An American Tail is easily one of the very best animated movies ever made, so I can’t really judge someone for getting a bit nostalgic over it.
Alongside The Secret of NIMH, it was Don Bluth at his best.
Edited because: I wrote Tale instead of Tail, I'm an idiot
Sorry, that’s one of my favorite childhood movies. Heck, the song “Somewhere Out There” still fills me with nostalgia, and makes my eyes water.
Thats what I was thinking,
should it be something relating to Luna and Scootaloo?
Fievel: Me Too!!
And the streets are paved with cheese!
There no cats in Equestria!
So set your mind at ease.
You’re not alone, yo. I felt a feeling as well.
Also, did you know that there are no cats in America? Who knew!
