I’m saying that when Tirek discovers the Princesses already blank flanks, the glow of his eyes in this shot is when he hits them with a paralyzing gaze, making them completely helpless to try and stop him from sending them into Tartarus to rot like he did, and thus convince him that now with its Princesses gone, Equestria is ripe for the conquering.

I wonder if they have the rights to use Tirek. Most G1 ponies are apparently in some kind of legal hell, but Applejack and Spike (who started out as a reluctant-ish minion in Tirek’s forces) were both carried over to G4. Still, it seems this might be Tirek in spirit if not in name.
