I don’t think they’d show actual pain or something like that, but maybe he’ll have to go through another important experience before his wings grow. They’ve been going on with Spike’s self-worth lessons, but they still haven’t touched the most important one, in that he’s a dragon living among a competely different race. It doesn’t amount to much yet because he’s barely the size of a filly, but once those growth spurts start kickiing, those fangs start showing more pominently and those sneezes start burning homes to the ground, they’ll have the perfect chance to bring in the “I don’t belong” situation, which presents them with a perfect opportunity for an amazing lesson of friendship.
 
And that could be a pretty good time to have him grow his wings as well.

Agreed. Everything happens too easily on the show, and Spike getting wings that unfold or unwrap form his bodily painfully would be an excellent way for the main cast to show their genuine concern.

I really want this to happen, but I kinda want it to be painful. Only so the girls would show ACTUAL concern for him.
