First off, I think the flavor text more so meant to be a joke, not some tragic piece. Also We did have that episode that focused on the pets and spike, plus that Pinkie apple pie which focused on the apple kin, Celestia had an entire flash back and that scene of her staring into the window at luna, and….well…..most CMC episodes.
To say that the writers don’t want to do something is a bit “off base”, with the way things are going, I think it’s more in the way of they simply haven’t yet. :/

I truly believe there is so much potential with a lot of characters like Shining Armour, Celestia and others but no one at DHX wants to explore it since ‘There would be no focus on the Mane 6 and we couldn’t have that’.
They introduced a stallion who has every reason to be involved in the larger world, but isn’t. It’s okay if he loses, but it seems like he’s never proactive. Feels like such a waste.
Well, then he married. And that’s when hell began…
