They’re only from the toy line. There are several characters that were not in the show or comics.
My personal headcanon has been that they’re the princesses of Time, with Gold Lily representing the past and Sterling representing the future. But I should probably scrap that one since canon already has the reindeer for the time thing now.
It was also referenced by Mario & Luigi 3!!! and Steel Ball Run. :3
“Animal Crossing: City Folk” referenced that old story too… Except usually Serena the fountain spirit won’t give you schmitz if you throw an ax in her fountain, regardless how you answer. Sometimes she’d even berate you for it too, and take away the ax you threw in too. (To this day, I still haven’t gotten the gold ax from her.)
Nobody really missec Serena when she didn’t return in “New Leaf.”
