It wasn’t even Ahuizotl’s. It was Daring’s. While we’re not sure of how large Ahuizotl’s was, Caballeron probably got tired of waiting and took what he could. It obviously wasn’t enough to go into retirement as he’s still here today.

He technically succeeded on his plan in his first encounter with the main cast. Ahuizoltl who paid them a large sum was the one who had his plan thwarted while Caballeron ran away with his loot.

For a while I always thought he would be the type to be less sane than the others. Oh boy does this hold to that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if his many failures at the hands of Daring Do have started to take a toll on his sanity.

Like I said in the Season 7 forum thread, it was really unnerving seeing him like this not only for the attempt, but for the way he acted as well. The closest comparison I could make to him in terms of personalits would be Starlight, just more boastful. He’s usually carrying a charismatic sorta charm and calm attitude most of the time when things are going his way. And even when he’s angry, he still held something to it that didn’t make him like he is here.
 
Here… it’s not too noticeable at first thought or watch, his usual behavior is just gone aside from that boastfulness. Hell, even his voice is off in terms of how he usually speaks. He just kinda slips into temporary insanity in this scene.
 
I think the scene is so dark like you said is because he is one of the few pony characters to do something like this. And not even a powerful one at that, he’s just an ordinary pony.

I think this might be the darkest the show has ever gotten. In the fights with villains like Tirek and Sombra, it’s implicit that characters would have been killed if they’d lost, but here we see Caballeron explicitly trying to kill Dash in cold blood just to break Daring Do’s spirit.

Since his first appearance I though there was a lot of great villainous fanfiction potential for doctor caballeron’s character but there’s very little written with the guy. If not for Rainbow and pinkie’s interference his plan really would of likely worked. Hope we see more of him in the future.

Seriously though, that little sanity slippage for him was kinda unnerving.
