Given the Japanese predilection for adult/teenager romances, sensei would probably work as well for the trope, but I kind of like the idea that it’s the off-screen petting proposer, because that actually reverses the trope completely. :-)
Unless it’s said in an exasperated tone of voice. “Sempai, sore wa atashi no imi ja nai yo!” Said by Twilight, most likely. :-)

Oh, I threw that in there to complete the quote/trope the line is from. But if it makes you feel better, you can pretend that it’s either a) whomever is proposing the pettins is saying ‘sempai’ from off screen or b) he’s referring to you, the viewer, who is most assuredly older than when Lauren Faust first drew him, and thus is metaphysically, literally, older. XP
SenSEI literally means “born earlier” but because its less literal meaning is “teacher” Discord could call any number of ponies sensei if he felt like it. But semPAI means “student older than me”, which… Celestia? I mean… I can’t see who else could possibly fall in that category…
Obviously Discord wouldn’t like it. :-)
