I could never understand how people come to rely on “fuel” for ships in a show like this. It’s just not happening and it seriously hinders the imagination.
When I see a relationship developing on screen, to me it means the opposite of romance, simply because that is the message. Romance is barely even secondary.
Oh, my rage in terms of Vinyl x Octavia is greater than FlutterMac ever will be. However, given they’re still not shown interacting before Filli Vanilli, I maintain my lack of fuel for it.
That’s not really being fair, because Vinyl x Octavia is 100% crack with no canon personality involved whereas Fluttershy and Big Mac are actual characters that actually have reasons to interact that aren’t contrived or ridiculous. I’m not saying those reasons are enough, but we’re not talking about background ponies here.
If you’re closed to the possibility, then then that’s that. There’s really nothing more to say.
I hate Vinyl x Octavia for similar reasons to yours.
Personally, this is one of the few that has practically zero show canon, and I like at least a little canon in my ships. It’s also boring and overused; the two most common scenarios are they’re meeting each other and are “perfect mates” because they’re quiet and they’re kind, or they’re already together and spend barely any time talking to each other and prefer to spend quiet time together. That’s it. It has almost little to no fuel for me.
To be fair, I have the same complaints about Vinyl x Octavia: practically zero show canon and the same scenario being used over and over to the point where it’s no longer novel or interesting.

Actually, Fluttershy was invited to sing on the fly because she knew all the songs. It’s implied there was little, possibly zero time to practice for all the events, and it only worked because Fluttershy was a fan of their music and knew it all already, which was the reason Rarity convinced Fluttershy to use the Poison Joke in the first place.
It was also implied that they practiced one-on-one for the lip sycncing thing. They do interact, but I guess it’s just never interesting enough to be shown on screen.
The first time we’ve seen them together in the show. Doesn’t mean they haven’t spent time together that hasn’t been shown in the series.
Not that I care for pretty much any of the fandom ships (Lyrabon mostly excepted), but why is it that this one, seemingly more than any other, gets people arguing about how it doesn’t have any basis in the show?
Modifying this slightly.
Fluttershy asked Big Macintosh if she could sing once, still doing the vocals with Mac just lip-syncing towards the last 5 minutes of the episode. But to put this in perspective, it’s still the first time in 4 seasons they’ve spoken to each other, the only time they speak to one another, and the first time in 4 seasons they’ve even been seen in the same scene.
Big Mac’s quiet by choice, but he also sings before crowds willingly. In the first episode and others, he’s seen to be able to talk quiet freely.
Big Mac works on a farm, Fluttershy works with animals. Not both are with nature. “Farms” are not natural.
They haven’t even shared a sentence. Even in Filli Vanilli only Fluttershy spoke to him, and was only using him to sing herself.
Because they’re both quiet, and both work with nature.
There’ve certainly been sillier rationalizations for OTPs before.
Also, that first fic doesn’t really deal with their relationship, it’s kind of a prequel to flesh out Mac’s character for her other stories.
I don’t expect to convert anyone. You either get it or you don’t. Enjoy the story.
alright. i read the first of them. it was well written, but most of the tension in the story came from the situation as opposed to the relationship. i like the story - liked and faved on fimfiction.net - but currently it’s not enough to convince me. i will read the sequels, mostly because the author is good.
which is my problem with it. the most interesting fic i’d read before was the two not speaking and enjoying an afternoon and it bored me.

braeburn is “much handsomest stallion”, and luna is “most beauteous mare”. i do not find fluttershy as cute and charming as everyone else does. it probably doesn’t help that i see something of my own fear and self-doubt in fluttershy, a part of me which i do not like and wish to change.

…you try to give me a fic to read that contains fluttermac that is both interesting and contains a decent buildup with the ship instead of making them already a couple from square one.
Just wait until the Fluttercord guy from /mlp/ with the poor grammar gets here. Then it’ll be a party.
After all this ship has been through, I really don’t think so. This ship, as with most doesn’t need canon validation to sail.
