That’s impossible. I’m referring to the whole idea of sticking things in there. Anyway, I wish that first comment had never even brought it up, since it really has no place in this thread.

Sombra also seemed to be working under the assumption that whoever infiltrated his castle would be working alone.
Exactly. That’s a pretty absurd assumption.
I can’t really buy that you could just walk into it from the outside.
Entirely speculative headcanons aside, there was no indication that any flying creature couldn’t waltz in any time they liked.
probably wouldn’t work
Again, this is merely an almost fanwanky solution to an obvious problem that simply wasn’t addressed in the show. But what we do see is that it was surprisingly easy to grab the crystal. Sombra’s security measures were eccentric and ineffective. Without his immediate presence, taking the crystal would be a simple matter of time. Even his “make the whole city disappear” scheme did nothing in the long run but delay the inevitable.

Dumb Luck really isn’t something that you can plan on. Sombra also seemed to be working under the assumption that whoever infiltrated his castle would be working alone.

The Heart was in a chamber reached by stairway that was accessed by a magic door. Exit was easier, but given the interior architecture that we saw, I can’t really buy that you could just walk into it from the outside. If nothing else, you’d expect a similar trap on those archways, and we’ve already seen that castle plays weird with space. Accessing the chamber through the archways resulting in reaching a different room fits with what we saw on screen.

The crystal wasn’t thrown from inside of the cage. It was knocked outside when the cage was activated. Admittedly, the trap could have used testing.

It was also being held in place by magic, so just trying to grab it remotely probably wouldn’t work.

His brilliant plans were defeated by “dumb luck”? If dumb defeats brilliant, it must not have been so ingenious in the first place.

If you look at Spike’s exit from the tower, you can see that any flying thing could drop in any time they liked. And if tossing the heart out of the circle is all you need to do, than even a locked safe would’ve worked better.

How’s a pegasus supposed to reach it, exactly? The second set of stairs passed through where the throne room was without actually physically intersecting, so something weird was going on with the placement.

We also never saw anyone get past the cage around the Heart. It was just dumb luck that it landed outside of the cage.

The only significant obstacle in any of that is the fact that a specific magic blast has to be used in the throne room and on the door. However, since the animators have carelessly shown that there are pegasi among the crystal ponies (and that cystal ponies are evidently great climbers), virtually all of Sombra’s incredibly gentle, harmless snares are nullified. You don’t even have to be all that brilliant to guess where he put the thing. Face it, his traps aren’t that great. His assumption would have to have been that he had the power to defend the Heart personally. He didn’t put that much thought into any other kind of security.

He definitely wasn’t mindless in the past, but being turned into a smog monsters seemed to destroy his reasoning capabilities.

Would the Sombra of the past really just sit outside the border? Especially since we saw him get some black crystals through on Shining’s horn.

To get to the crystal heart, you need to do all of the following before he can catch you and stop you, in a kingdom of ponies with no unicorns:
  1. Be able to cast dark magic (Which season 4’s opener hints might actually be alicorn magic) and know to do so on a specific crystal.
  2. Descend a massive staircase
  3. Open a door that evades being opened and if you try to use the same magic to open, will mentally ensnare you in a vision of your darkest fears someone else has to wake you up from.
  4. Ascend a massive staircase at least twice as long as the first one.
  5. Retrieve the crystal heart, the only thing which can defeat him, which is trapped to instantly alert Sombra who can remotely activate a trap that is unicorn-proofed and possibly also pegasi proofed (we don’t have any way to see if trying to fly out the top wouldn’t just yank you back in like teleporting out does)
  6. Either leap from the top of the castle or go back through both absurdly huge staircases

Yeah, that’s right. As I said it wasn’t perfect, but for me it was fun to watch, and proves that Sombra wasn’t a completely mindless vilain. I see why you don’t like him, but for me he was awesome :)

A horn lock like Celestia had for her vault would’ve been more effective than “endless stairs”. I mean come on, even Ahuitzotl knows the value of a few spear traps for cryin out loud.

And don’t forget, the “anti-teleportation” was effected by the dark crystals which Sombra had to manually activate. Very inefficient, and it didn’t even harm Twilight at all, or prevent her from taking the Heart, or from talking to Spike.
