Yeah, I know, they replaced him with Jerome “Curly” Howard when they started making theatrical shorts. Then after Curly had a stroke on-set, and had to retire, Shemp rejoined them replacing him.
(They still gave Curly a cameo in a Shemp-era short “Hold that Lion.” He was also going to have a cameo role in “Malice in the Palace” originally, but was cut for some reason.)
Shemp was actually the original third stooge.
Joe Besser is clearly Twist.

Funny thing is, technically there were 6 Stooges. (The third kept having to get replaced.)
Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Curly Howard, Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, and Curly Joe.
