Luna nodded, casually looking over the board, “While it may not be as fun or interesting as the games Pinkie Pie develops, chess is a notoriously, deceptively complicated game. It is estimated that there are more potential outcomes than we could ever even build a computer to calculate, and thus, it has never been ‘solved’. Computers play it by developing oversimplified models of moves they deem ‘good’ or ‘bad’, and calculating out the future moves as far as they can see. A very clever computer will also try to predict what you are most likely to do in response, and take that into account, but in the end, it is too complicated to have your entire plan thought out from the beginning. The only way to win against a truly formidable opponent is to recalculate your strategy every move.” She picked up a black knight in her magic, “There’s also an external constraint, one which didn’t need to be built into the game: time. You have to take your time, to think of moves, but you know you don’t have all day to play a single chess game, So you make the best move you can without spending a whole day on it.” she took one of Twilight’s lavender bishops, the last on the board, “Check.”

Twilight grinned, “You’re going to love this next part!” she moved another piece.

Luna tilted her head, “Is this a game where I win, Twilight? Because I don’t see how you’re going to come back from this.”
