When has her magical abilities ever been brought up? As far as I remember, the only measure we’ve gotten has been either while superpowered by the Alicorn amulet, or from the oohs and wows of a crowd, where entertainment is her talent.

Trixie was always portrayed as good at magic, it’s just that compared to a wunderkind like Twilight, she’s outclassed.

I dunno. Considering how often the main characters get called on to do everything, I’m not convinced their Yellow Pages isn’t just one sheet that says “Call one of these six”.
 
On a more serious note, I wouldn’t go so far as to say she’s trying to be friends. It’s more like she just doesn’t have a personal vendetta against them and trusts them to not be jerks.

Seeing as how she not only took a chance that Rainbow Dash would be willing to save her back in Dimondia, but evidently invited this group to see her show as well, she seems to be genuinely trying to make friends with them. In her own way.
 
Which I think is rather sweet, and a good lesson for the actual target demographic.
 
It’s also a nice change from her various fanon characterizations that have become very worn out over the years. “Wants to be good but keeps getting into trouble anyway” has potential for stories and is funny; I’ll gladly take that over “hated everywhere” or “constantly angry misanthrope” any day.
