@The Twelfth Doctor Whoof
Working on the assumption that there is more EQG to come, and while it will be based on the standard high school comedy tropes but with a bit of Equestrian magic “leaking” into it indefinitely, then the plot line of redeeming Sunset, establishing her as the 6th Mane 6 and somehow giving her ‘‘just’’ enough magic as to complete the Friendship Magic stuff with the other Mane 5, is perfect and thus would severe the need for Twilight to return in the future. Which, depending on how well they redeem Sunset, I would be okay with. (Behind the scenes, this removes the only non-local VA from the voice cast, Tara Strong, which may help make the production for post-EQG2 work cheaper).
They just need enough Twilight in EQG2 to do the redemption and give Sunset some type of magic. It’s all there and possible, just don’t know if that is the way they will take.
@The Twelfth Doctor Whoof
I’m 100% with you there, though I’d rather human Trixie actually gets a speaking (perhaps supporting even) role and they stay far away from the pony universe as a whole, I’m thinking Sunset enjoys her time as a human so much she doesn’t want to go back.
I’d love it if Human Twilight is actually a really bad person and she becomes one of the villains (Would justify keeping Tara Strong around to voice the next movies or the series).
@Masem
The less Twilight there is in EQG2 (and onward), the happier I’ll be. Twi came and did her thing in the first one. From a pure narrative standpoint, that universe really doesn’t need her anymore; they’ve got Sunset, who to me is a far more interesting character.
Though ideally I’d rather Sunset return to Equestria proper to start repairing those burnt bridges and maybe join up with Trixie to call out Twilight on all the crap Our Purple Saviour never gets punished for.
@Masem
Yes please, shit maybe I should stop discussing this movie before I get unrealistic expectations. FiM became extremely disappointing once I started speculating about the future episodes with friends, using preview info.
@RainbowDash69
Between all the previews, while Twi is going to be the deus ex princessa and mcguffin, I don’t think it is “it’s all about Twi!”, this is definitely setting up for fully redeeming Sunset Shimmer, as possibly to set a point that she becomes the EQG Mane 6 and thus severing the need for Pony!Twi to return.
@RainbowDash69
THey could have made this movie without Twilight… have Sunset fix it, she has experiences with magic and whatever. That being said, it’s confirmed there’s going to be an EG series, so hopefully that one is twilight free, or with Human Twilight instead.
@RainbowDash69
At worse she should have a duet with Twi (though that sounds kinda neat, somthing like Life’s Too Short where they disagree with each other and it’s passive aggressive glory), but really I’d prefer if Twilight wasn’t in this movie, I hope she and the other 5 don’t have that many songs.
@Masem
I wouldn’t be surprised the only real reason twilight is there at all is behind the scenes legal stuff. I’m with you, I’d rather Equestria Girls takes off away from the usual mane 6 and becomes its own original thing (I’m sick of the usual characters).
@Lucas Osse
Everything’s being set up that Twilight’s not going to be the key focus of this movie. She’s the McGuffin needed to end whatever the Adagio plan is being the focal point of magic, but I’m really hoping most of the resolution is through Sunset’s direct actions. (I really really hope that to get Twilight, Sunset offers to go back through to the pony world, as to give her a short scene with Cele to put a resolve to that end)
@Masem
I’m really digging it too, I hated the original movie, but her character is the one reason it was remotely enjoyable for me. The sequel might just be a little decent after all, maybe good even. So long as Sunset and the Dazzlings get plenty of screen time I’ll be happy.

I like that idea

Heh, yeah, we don’t wanna talk about it.

I totally agree!
Unfortunately twi is the center most important thing in the whole multiverse

Good
If she just does backup lines for the princess I will be so mad
It was confirmed that she’ll sing in the movie :3
Ok then, nevermind.
…
I don’t know what you’re talking about… I stopped watching the show after ep 9 of season 4 though, did I miss something?
I’m just sayin’, after the incident with Discord, I’m not too sure if we should get all fuzzy with the… Previous enemy.
What exactly do you mean?
I wouldn’t get too warmed up to her if I were you. Something about her seems… Off…
Nah, it was just an expression. There’s already a tag called shimmerbetes.

Ah, so we do, and the results are heart melting.
I think this deserves that tag, don’t you?
