When comparing to real horses though, it’s better to tread carefully, seeing as there are many differences between magical talking equines and these ones.
Since marshmellow horses are different, magical zebras most likely are too. The only thing we know about their genetics is about breeding between sub-races. Zebras weren’t even mentioned. So we’re at a blank.

It’s definitely a subject left to speculation, but it’s all but stated that Zebras are the equivalent of black-skinned folk. But that begs a question - what if pony and zebra bred? What genes would be left in? Are we to assume it works the same as the black gene?
What would change if ANY zebra genes were to surface? We don’t even know Lee’s history, other than that his parents were also black. Since we know the correlation between black and zebra, it’s logical to at least assume that he would be a zebra, wouldn’t you agree?
Zebras are the equivelants of Africans, not african americans. How many black people do you come across in america with an African accent? Not many, I assume.
Something like a Zebroid would do, or just a regular pony. Besides, a ponified version of Sheriff Bart from Blazing Saddles showed up in the comics as a brown pony.

It isn’t racist to point out that Zebras are the equivalent of black people. The only zebra on the show is voiced by a black woman, she borrows several cultural practises from Africa… Need I go on?
That’s like saying that “blacks were slaves once” is racist. Ridiculous.
