Unlikely. Twilight has reverse potential, meaning her magic was maxed out as a child, and it will take her entire life to control its full power.

The problem isn’t ‘her body is too strong for her mind’ or ‘her body cannot keep up with her will’ tropes; she has all that power because she’s the element of magic, not the other way around. If it was the other way around, her power wouldn’t be the weakest of the 6, 7 if we include Spike’s dragonfire, when using willpower instead of magic. (see Power Ponies and Rainbow Rocks)

As said in both Cutie Mark Chronicles and Magic Duel, she has only mastered a fraction of her power, and its still not equal to Celestia going full power and not underestimating her opponent. Twilight may have some room to grow beyond that, but since she’s a ‘Cadence’ class alicorn, its not worth comparing to Celestia. And she has not shown a fraction of the will necessary to control her power….ironically, Human Twilight, if and when she awakens as the Element of Magic of the human world, probably has more potential then her because she’s not so cripplingly co-dependent.

Besides, this is Celestia she’s being pitted against. Twilight would curl into a ball before trying to fight her. In the comics Twilight actually fought an evil Celestia she didn’t respect and was overpowered immediately, but was saved and Celestia was forced back by Dash.

Exactly, I think Twilight truly doesn’t give herself enough credits of how powerful she really is, which is understandable. Really who else would get it together right away if you’re suddenly part of this whole destiny or prophecy thing? One moment you’re a college student than the next moment people worship your apparent mighty.

I’m unconvinced. Celestia’s been built up quite a bit, but the greatest evidence we have of her power is Twilight’s hero worship of her. I’m willing to bet Twilight overestimates her mentor and underestimates herself.

I don’t think so. Maybe she would lose at this very moment, but I’m pretty sure that some years in the future she could win. I believe there are plenty of signs already that Twilight has an huge amount of potential. The S4 finale kinda implied that too. And I’m not talking about their failed strategy or flawed explanation of winning time, since Tirek somehow doesn’t know about Twilight’s existence (while on the other hand being aware of Cadance). There was also a mention of her being the element of magic, so if someone would be able to control all of that magic, she is the one.

I mean think about it, every unicorn have magic mostly being specialized to their talents which makes them limited to using more diverse spells. As alicorns, Celestia, Luna and Cadance are extremely powerful and could wield all kinds of magic, but they too have their own unique kind of magic (controlling the sun etc.). Though from the very first season we’ve seen a special skill that belongs to Twilight, which is being a copycat. In s3 she learned doing dark magic by just observing Celestia. This is all possible because she’s the living being of magic. If magic is her talent and well..being, doesn’t that make her magic potential pretty much limitless?

Also let’s not forget that I’m here only talking about Twilight on her own. If the mane 6 gets in action together, no one would be safe. After all the magic of friendship is the most powerful type of magic apparently :p

Celly probably underestimates her former student here. If Twilight would really be pushed to the edge (which is not too far from here in this picture), I think, with pain in her heart, she would take her on.
