I had a similar theory, if that cheers you up.
Once Twilight got her castle, the mirror was moved there, and thus she now had responsibility over it. Just like Cadence in the first movie.
Incidentally, I had the notion, sometime before the first movie, that Twilight would have the mirror moved into her house so as to have constant access to it. This was long before anything about the mirror or its rules were actually known.
