@redweasel
Yeah, he ain’t sympathetic— literally in-story AND meta, by design. The God Hand — well, heavy heavy spoilers, plus a chapter that’s redacted-but-not-really-the-Author-just-released-it~~”too early”-and-told-everyone-to-never-publish-it-again-because-it-is-a-HUGE-fucking-plot-dump/spoiler-so-stop-reading-if-you don’t-want-it-I’m-serious-ok-here-goes-there’s-basically-a-evil-god-born-from-human-suffering-called-The-Idea-Of-Evil-who-made-the-hellscape,-demons,-and-the-God-Hand-to-justify-the-existance-of-pain,-based-on-the-judeochristian-Problem-Of-Evil-thing (if God is all good, always good, and all powerful, then why is there evil? Either he is not all good and won’t, or he is not all-powerful and can’t)
So, this thing, and the God Hand, can see-~~ not quite “the future, period.” but CAN see and manipulate causality, to the end that Griffith’s very genealogy, upbringing, and life-experiences, have been manipulated to make him THAT power-hungry.
In short, the entire point of his existence is for him to be a self-centered asshole. So, he may be a little sympathetic as a tool of fate, if not that that it’s exactly what he wants (except then it loops back into ‘because he was tailor-made to want it’).
Which is why he flips his shit when Guts walks out on the Hawks– basically the homoerotic context was that Griffith felt that he owned Guts, period. The guy who did the Abridged series I linked plays this up a lot, it’s hilarious.
In fact, he does make a Naruto/Sasuke comparison joke on that exact thing.
Not exactly. Nobody wants to destroy the world, hell for Griffith that’s the exact opposite of what he wants: You can’t rule a kingdom if there is none after all.
Griffith killed the queen because she would have killed him and because she was an obstacle on the way to his goal: Becoming king himself eventually. Guts leaves shortly after this because of a misunderstanding between him and griffith, which ends up shaking Griffith to the core and causes him to do something stupid: Sleep with the Princess, which the king finds out about.
Needless to say, this is a big no-no.
The King has griffith captured and tortured, declaring Griffiths men outlaws to be hunted down. A year later, Guts finds his old friends and teams up to help break griffith out but…by then he’s crippled badly and unable to lead them anymore.
Shortly after this, the eclipse ceremony happens and Griffith is given the choice: Sacrifice your comrades and friends to become an archdemon, or spend your life a cripple. He chooses to sacrifice them.
After he’s reborn, he ends up raping his lieutenant Casca in-front of Guts (Who loses an arm and an eye just trying to stop him only to get stopped by demons dogpiling him). Guts and Casca are only saved by the timely intervention of the skull knight, who breaks them out.
Casca and guts lose their mind in different ways: Casca reverts to a childlike mental state, while Guts becomes overwhelmed by his own rage in a quest for revenge, becoming just as bad as the very monsters he’s fighting.
You are right about one thing though: The berserk setting is one helluva crapsack world.
so, he saves his friends by killing a queen, and then they walk out on him, leaving him to be tortured and crippled. he finds a way to heal himself which involves killing them and will destroy the world, and says “fuck it” b/c what good is a world that takes good people, walks out on them, and breaks their legs? seems kind of sympathetic to me.
@iamli3
Well, Guts is based on a real medieval-era person who also lost a hand, and had an articulated fist made just so he could still murder things to death.
Still, the anime is definitely worth your while. It’s a bit old, and the animation kind of shoddy, true. But, it does a good job retelling the first arc and it is very good.
Also, you might wanna stay away from the movies that retell the golden age until you’ve at-least seen the original anime or read the manga. They more or less gutted the character development and left some things out of the story.
Oh, and the demons don’t appear out of nowhere: they fight some early on, and they build the fuck out of them and the Behlit, but holy shit, the ending to the anime…
If your perpherial vision sees no other spoiler, then this is the one to get you interested in watching that anime: EVIL WINS.

Though, if yo really want a short version— first:
“The blooper reel from the US dub”: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwyZcaEo1rsrBJvOYkIEwSiLD_-zcd3nH
Just to distract you if you change your mind about wanting to see spoilers. Check those vids out. Blooper reel and Hbi2K’s Abridged series are really funny, and the dubbed version itself is as fantastic as the original Japanese.
Anywho, spoiler time. Guts is a sword-for-hire, and the main character, and somewhat of a jackass, because his childhood sucked. He ends up joining a mercenary company called The Band of the Hawks, led by Griffith. Lots of great bonding, they get hired by a king in a huge-ass war, some bromance and hetero-boning, English Goku is an extra in the US version, Caska hatefucks Guts, Griffith shows guts his necklace, gets killed, the company is almost killed by the Queen, but Griffith faked his death and kills her, Guts leaves, Griffith has a breakdown over it, nails the princess, is imprisoned and the Hawks are outlaws, they break him out, but he’s been tortured so he’s a cripple for life, so that necklace (a red stone with a living face called a Behlit) is actually the focus for a contract with a group of Demons called the God’s Hand, and rather than be a cripple for life, Griffith turns evil and sacrifices most of the Hawks to the demons, literally unlocking the gates to hell, to join the God Hand himself. Of the two other surviving Hawks, Caska is now his personal sex toy, and Guts wanders the world slaughtering demons, and must eventually fight the God Hand, and stop Griffith, all while demonic hordes attempt to wipe out mankind.
Highly recommend getting the disk set for that anime– tho it is basically just the first arc of the manga and the video games. Still, it’s a pretty good stand-alone story even if you only see that part. Tho, obvious spoiler alert, ends in a huge goddamned, satus-quo-RAPING cliffhanger to lead you to the rest of the franchise.
@Background Pony #5FD4
there an abbreviated version i can see somewhere? or are we talking about 200 episodes of pointless naruto backstory before the important fight story here?…..
In response to the description. I don’t know, they’ve handled some pretty crazy stuff. But can Tirek, Discord, Luna, Celestia and Cadance handle Griffith? The guy did beat Zodd into a pulp and made him a servant at one point in the series.
wheatly; aye
compion cube; AYE.

Or, here’s the wiki article for a bit more accuracy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserk_28manga29#Plot

The story she will tell is of Kentaro Miura’s berserk…in which case, this is probably going to take a while for Cadence to tell it. xD
can Tirek, Discord, Luna, Celestia and Cadance handle Griffith?
In a word? No.
It’ll be either her or Granny Smith.
