Unknown to us until recently, there are seven elements. Destiny often picks people around the same age. How was Sunset going to be the same age when she was 15 and the other six elements of harmony were just 7 or 8? Traveling to and living in an unsychronized alternate dimension for 30 months.
There’s a seventh element? There can be more than one of the same elemant.
@OneOverTwo
No dice on that theory. Not only is it disproved in the comic, that would make Celestia the absolute worst mentor in the world!….wait.
Anyway, what I mean to say is that would mean that Celestia let Sunset go maniacal AND get lost in a whole different dimension around the same age as filly Twilight. That’s just absurd.
@OneOverTwo Perpetual sleepover at Pinkie’s house?
To be fair that DOES seem to be a recurring theme for any unicorn antagonist down on their luck.
@Scrounge
Taking everything into account, from her duality cutie mark to the fact she was born 8 years prior to the other elements yet is the same rough age as them now due to dimension travel, to the fact there is even a Celestia and Luna alternate somehow, there is a strong possibility that she is simply the only Sunset Shimmer in the pan-dimensionality.
@OneOverTwo
If you count the comics as canon, there are enough established universes for that. Or there could just be a world populated entirely by Sunset Shimmers waiting for you out there somewhere.
@Scrounge
Wait that means it’s possible that a Sunset from a third universe fell thru yet another portal & this universe could have three Sunset Shimmers in it! A man can dream, dang it!
@PonyPon
I’m just saying it’s possible that Human Sunset is gone. Hell, she could have fallen into another portal and wound up in another alternate dimension. I’m just saying, there are, in theory, ways to not have two Sunsets.
@CronoM
Logically, it’d just be a visit though. Sunset also probably has a house or something in Humanworld, we never actually see where she lives… Perpetual sleepover at Pinkie’s house?
@OneOverTwo
Sunset still values Celestia and Celestia’s opinion of her. That alone is enough of a reason to at least visit. When she’s ready of course.
@Dr Outback
I should note that unlike Twilight, Sunset was on the other side for at least 2 years and actually had to be in the system.
A common theme I’ve noticed in duel dimension fiction is if you cross into a dimension before the two dimensions are syncronized, your alternate is sometimes fated to die beforehand or not even exist. Unknown to us until recently, there are seven elements. Destiny often picks people around the same age. How was Sunset going to be the same age when she was 15 and the other six elements of harmony were just 7 or 8? Traveling to and living in an unsychronized alternate dimension for 30 months.
For all we know, Sunset could be the balance between both worlds.
As for why she doesn’t return, its clear she isn’t ready yet. The amount of trepidation in her voice when she thought she was writing to Celestia for the first time in ages. What was she going to say if they met again face to face so soon after the event? ‘Sorry for everything but I’m good now’? Easier said then done, Zuko can attest to that.
What Sunset needs is time to figure out who she really is. She doesn’t want to jump back onto her teacher’s leash, when she finally has the courage to apologize, she wants to see Celestia as an equal. I DO hope for an episode or a comic where Sunset and Celestia are finally able to talk in person again.

While it is possible. Is more likely that there is a Human Sunset. So far almost everyone of to note we seen a human version of. This Human world isn’t small. We were lucky to see so many of the doubles. Equestria Sunset changed it s safe to assume that Human Sunset is like her old self. That could cause some problems since only a handful of people even know that there are two Sunsets. While not unfounded it is also an assumption that Sunset Shimmer has no ties to Equestria. Yes she made friends but that was in lesser than a year an only with Twilight’s help. I’m sure there are ponies she wants to make amends with like Princess Celestia (I’m sure Twi has put in a good word with her). The only reason that she didn’t go back when she had (and still has) the chance because she’ doesn’t feel like she’s ready (even though I think she totally is) to face them.
@PonyPon
That last thing you said: that’s exactly the point. If there IS another Sunset Shimmer (and I’m not saying there ISN’T one, I’m just pointing out we haven’t seen her yet and therefore have no proof of her existence), then having two Sunset Shimmers live separate lives won’t be a problem. The main reason Twilight’s friends stayed behind was to avoid the confusion that would inevitably arise from having multiple doubles that no one in that world had ever met before suddenly appearing out of nowhere; such confusion would be MUCH easier to avoid with two Sunset Shimmers that had lived separately in the same world for an extended period of time, because there would more likely be established ways to distinguish them.
@Dr Outback
First, we don’t know if there IS another Sunset Shimmer; just because a lot of ponies have human equivalents doesn’t mean they all do. Second, the only reason Twilight didn’t let her friends come was because having five doppelgängers suddenly pop up would look really suspicious and just be confusing to deal with; IF there is another Sunset, she doesn’t seem to live in the same area, so THAT wouldn’t be a factor. And third, even if they DO meet, they’d have different histories and different lives; a person is more than their name, after all, so there’s no reason they can’t live in the same world as two different people. So they’d have the same name and look similar. Speaking from experience, it’s not THAT big a deal.
Sunset: Oh yeah, let me get right on going back to the absolutely nothing waiting for me back home. Seriously, I’m pretty sure all my worldly possessions in Equestria were sold long ago. Plus, I was living with Celestia before I came here, and I’m not exactly over the shame of attempting to overthrow her; be a bit of an awkward reunion. Besides Twilight, I have no established pony friends, and my family is probably in the same place as Fluttershy’s family. Here, I’ve got an established group of friends, a spot in a band, and in another year or two, I’ll have a high school diploma that can help my future employment goals. I ran away from my last school in Equestria; I’ve got, like, zero prospects of what to do with myself if I went back. But no, you’re right, I should totally go back, because home isn’t about where you belong or who you’re with, it’s about the physical location of your birth.
Someone should draw this.
@CronoM

Sounds EXACTLY what a master planner would devise.
Sounds legit. Perfect sense. Celestia is just that gawdawfully manipulative.
“She IS a princess!”
What disproves it in the comic?
No dice on that theory. Not only is it disproved in the comic, that would make Celestia the absolute worst mentor in the world!….wait.
Anyway, what I mean to say is that would mean that Celestia let Sunset go maniacal AND get lost in a whole different dimension around the same age as filly Twilight. That’s just absurd.
Or Sunset’s body just set itself to match the age of the Sunset from Humanworld.
Perpetual sleepover at Pinkie’s house?

I’d think that would cause a bigger dilemma.
Surely someone would start screaming zombie.
There’s always the possibility that she died in a car crash or something.
Logically, it’d just be a visit though. Sunset also probably has a house or something in Humanworld, we never actually see where she lives…

Sunset still values Celestia and Celestia’s opinion of her. That alone is enough of a reason to at least visit. When she’s ready of course.
There’s also the thing where all of Sunset Shimmer’s friends are on the human side of the mirror.
I should note that unlike Twilight, Sunset was on the other side for at least 2 years and actually had to be in the system.

What reason is there not to be another one?
We’re well aware how these other worlds work in that regard, aren’t we?
And given what the people of this dimension are cool with, I don’t know how much suspicion half a dozen doubles would start.

Haven’t EG made it clear? We can’t have two Sunsets living the same place! This is EqG world not Tatooine!
An unkown factor, possibly all dead.
and her family?
