There are people who swear by normal body pillows, without pictures on them. So the way I see it, in some parts of the world it’s just a normal part of your bedroom setup, and then somebody decided to turn it into a piece of merchandise by putting a cartoon character on it.  
In that way, it’s not actually weirder than having a poster or doll of a cartoon/anime character. But because body pillows aren’t really a thing in some other parts of the world (like America, at least), we tend to think of them as sexual items. Like some kind of gateway toy to blow-up sex dolls.

I can’t say I get the body pillow thing, but it must rub some people the right way as it’s a thing that exists.

You know, every time I think about what it would be like to have a body pillow, I think about one part of Ben the Sage’s commentary of his review of the 80’s Fist of the North Star movie about a scrapped idea he had that involved a lewd body pillow of Hatsune Miku.
 
He couldn’t go through with it because he still felt like he had enough integrity to not purchase the kind of thing that tells people you’ve given up on trying to score.

I honestly believe there is nothing in this world more pathetic than owning a daki-whatever.
