Man I have to ask this, is this like a common American thing? Mascots doing shows and stuff? I mean here’s a freakin’ play-doh bucket there dancing too. What’s the point?
I’ve never seen anything like it here in The Netherlands.

I know even my 4-ear-old nephew would say this looks too stupid to be a thing.
Not trying to insult any one specifically, I’m just really wondering where this entire idea comes from and if it even works at all.

They’re not “toralitarian,” they just have some strict rules sometimes.
A relative of mine who had an art internship with Disney before said, when artists submit application portfolios to Disney, if they see any art that’s “cartoony,” or of their “characters,” they’re throw it in the trash. Apparently, to get hired as an artist for Disney you have to give them realistic art, sceneries, and such. They won’t hire you if you can’t draw realistically.

I refuse to believe Disney is a strict totalitarian place to work. i mean they exist to create love and wonder for children, right?

Yep, height requirements are pretty strict. The majority of those characters are played by women chiefly because of the height limits.

My own sister played several costumed characters in the parade at Disneyland for a few years. It’s pretty exhausting work: you’re carrying the weight of the costume (and sweltering underneath it), doing your rehearsed choreography with exaggerated movement so that your energy translates visually through the costume, and having to keep that energy up along the entire parade route. Plus, they’re not unionized (unlike most other divisions in the park), and there are real health hazards in the job (those heavy heads are pretty hard on your neck & back, and it’s not unusual for performers to take medical leave as a result). Definitely not as glamorous as a lot of people think.

Yeah, they also have strict rules to follow. (You’ll get fired if you remove your mask in front of kids.) Your sister having worked there would probably know what they all are.

Yes. From what I hear, Disney is VERY specific about the height requirements for characters. And of course, that’s in addition to endurance, balance, coordination, etc.

I hear it’s very hard to get those costume/mascot jobs at DisneyLand, because Disney has strict guidelines you have to follow, and many many people apply for those jobs surprisingly.

To be fair, some of ’em might be women. In fact, some women have dressed like male characters like Mickey Mouse, sports mascots, and such before.

You’re right I didn’t notice the source link, (adds “Youtube link” tag) it is more amusing then it should be.

I guess in a way those outfits are kinda cute/funny.

…okay then. Damn it, is there ANY way to make those pony quadsuits NOT inherently hilarious?

Video sold me on not just four people in pony suits, but also Mr. Potato Head and an anthropomorphic tub of Play-Doh all dancing awkwardly to “Helping Twilight Win the Crown.” I LOL’d so hard I almost spat my Mountain Dew all over my monitor and my Wacom tablet, and now I’m worried I woke up my roommate.
