He might actually be based on the qilin which is a creature from Chinese mythology which is said to be covered in flame and have a curved horn.  
But then again in traditional mythology qilin are a omen of prosperity and/or serenity.

He might actually be a crystal pony. I’d kind of like that: All of the main villains thus far have been eldritch abominations or pestilence demons, it’d be a nice change of pace if the villain was “just one of the guys”.

Actually, apparently Cadence is the leader of the Crystal Empire, which explains her purpose. She kind of has none if she’s lingering in Canterlot all the time, Celestia and Luna kind of do everything she would.
 
She was probably in Canterlot as Twilight’s foalsitter as part of a diplomatic mission. shrug

Who the fuck is this guy anyway? I’ve looked all over for info on him and I can’t find shit. I also keep seeing stuff about a “crystal empire” that also has no fucking explanation.
